The tests were long and sometimes extreme, if you were unlucky, the integregation could take years. The mass majority of immigrants were Chinese and faced more different and difficult challenges than those immigrating to Ellis Island. Because of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, this was why it was so difficult. The immigrants underwent detention, interrogation, quarantine, and deportation. Right after arriving upon Angel Islands, families were divided based on gender and were not allowed to see each other during detention in which lasted days, months, and even a few years. Most of the time was spent inside the overcrowded barracks awaiting for the government to decide if they’re getting deported or not.
