At my site, we have had in the past a focus on literacy across multiple subjects. There was a major shift this year - new admin, new teachers, etc. So this year may be different... I would like continued resources to share that match all disciplines and/or are cross-curricular.

Across all junior high science departments, it would be nice to have some connection or suggestions of common sources/texts to use.

I also think focusing on one discipline per meeting is a good idea. We could also invite teachers from other disciplines to then come and participate or share during the meeting what they are doing or what they would like to get help with.

1. I like Sharon's idea of having a theme for each meeting (ex. What does it look like to be literate in Science?) This could create powerful anchors and examples for teachers to use as a guide when they are planning activities.

2. I know teachers outside of ELA have anxiety about teaching writing.....maybe creating outlines/templates/common writing vocabulary.....like a "Teach Reading/Writing Toolbox". I'm not sure exactly what this would look like.

3. PLC time or an outline of discussions to calibrate and let teachers explore what do they want a final product in writing to look like? What do they want a reading strategy in their area to be?

**both of these questions could tie to Sharon's original idea of focusing on one content area at a time.

I think it would be good to have some guides to give the other content areas in terms of format for writing. I have worked in other districts that have created a writing handbook, and it explained everything the students needed to know to write an essay. Each student got a copy. Then it was clear across the school what the expectation was.

I believe it's really important to begin to incorporate academic vocabulary into each discipline. I'm not sure what this would look like, but it needs to be done in such a way that it's not just memorizing terms. Students need to be able to use them effectively in their writing and be able to teach the terms to other students.
