Impact & Changes:
Personal stories. Participating in protests in the 70's. Migrant farmworkers, and having to work in the fields (to understand how people are treated).
Experiences:
College speaks a lot about DEI issues, but little has been done. Needs to have everyone treated with kindness and respect. Very frustrated, when people talk loud and say nothing. Right now: just FRUSTRATED beyond belief. So many people before us that need us. Need to plan campaigns for generations to come (whether student gov. or in society, an issue cannot be "flavor of the month").
Support:
There's a minority coalition. Renewed efforts to support, faculty, staff and administrators of color. Small group often times the same people making the change. Hard when the space doesn't foster growth.
Needs:
Need to see more. In lifetime would like to see change.
More support, more training, more "how to." Training must be REQUIRED, not recommended. Need to have follow up after trainings. Grace with ourselves (COVID WALL)
What have we done:
Continue speaking up, continue advocating for people of color.

We are hyper visible and hyper invisible at the same time.
-As a Black women administrator it is a struggle finding my voice within oppressive systems of white supremacy and patriarchy
-Recognizing my privilege and seeing ways I can help others
-It has been very difficult helping my kids get through all of the negativity and feeling as though others do not value them.
Support system or Groups on Campus
-We developed a Racial Justice Taskforce at Norco College and I've been very involved in the subgroup working directly with our students about their experiences on campus and what we need to do to make it a safe space for them.
-We have developed many work groups and now have added a DEI coordinator to help bring clarity to the social justice work and where it belongs in the system
-Immediately had campus forums and discussions after death of George Floyd. Campus had permission to have raw/open conversations about systemic racism. Consciousness on campus created a safe space to speak up. Started a region-wide forum which also became a support system.
Needs
-The need to have a space where people of double oppressions have a voice.
1)	Grew up in midwestern community – more southern in attitude. Red state. Growing up there understand what it’s like to live in segregated community. Never paid much attn to political structure. Parents were democrat. Never associated being democrat with being black, just with family. Didn’t relate democrat with being more liberal. Basic issues at time trying to get equity around jobs, housing. Still fighting for those things. We don’t seem to learn from our mistakes. Don’t want to change including with race relations. Resistant to change because you are comfortable where you are. In higher education we are trying to serve but status quo doesn’t allow us to best serve. 2)	How many times do we have to travel this road? Been on road three or four times. Powerful push to what remembers in 60s. Not only national awareness but now we have international support. People from outside/other countries banding together. Added level of obligation on part of US to be responsive. The world is watching. Driven extremists, have felt empowered by past administration. Trying to lead college and continue foundation on which to build. Many challenges want to make college more receptive to all students. Have responsibility to college and want to make sure don’t leave out any student group. 3)	What are your needs? Needs center around external factors with pandemic, economy with state, many students/employees have lost jobs. So many things making people uneasy within work and home. My need as college leader is to make best decisions possible so I don’t further add to misery. Don’t want to add to people’s drama/trauma. Hard to balance school’s needs with human needs. Online in some ways has helped people to band together in a way. Easier in terms of logistics to gather. Have to continue to evolve.

1. How have you been impacted and changed by your own intersections with diversity, equity, and inclusion in your personal lives?
This is a difficult question to answer, for many of us our experiences have been shaped by how we grew up. The intersection of our identities have been a part of the experiences that have shaped who we are today. The personal in many cases is intertwined with our work.

2. What have your experiences been under the current resurgence of social justice movement at your college? Do you have a support system or group on campus?
The virtual environment has been good for organizing. It has helped with connecting with a wider group of colleagues across campus and seeing that what may be happening to one of us is happening to all of us. It has helped in creating a sense of unity.
A few of us have small number of folks who are our support system on our campuses.
3. What are your needs? What have you done about them?
Finding a way to improve scheduling has been challenging, there is so much going on. Taking walks and doing yoga has helped to step away.
The need to continue the work despite being small in numbers can be frustrating. Realizing that 5 people can change the work is important. You can have 100 people participating, but ultimately it's those 5 people really doing the work.

1. This was a difficult question for us to answer. It begins with discovering your own space and the diverse space of others. Allow yourself to being exposed to diversity and acceptance helps to move this anchor forward. We also must understand the life and paths others have gone through.
2. Ugliness did exist on our campus after the George Floyd tragedy. The positives have been that the college has come together as a whole and have created a level of unity. A committee entitled "The Black Community" has been created as a support system. Academic Senate has created a resolution which has been executed and is currently in action. Fighting for voices who feel voiceless is also being transcended.
3. The decrease in bureaucracy and an increase in effective leadership with true buy-in and authenticity must exist. More DEI trainings are needed with more active attendance from campus employees. Feeling a safe space to voice your opinions where you are not fearful of losing your current position.
