The father in Please Look after Mom arrives home and the house is described as "empty" and "deserted". The comparison of this emptiness with the description of what the house was like with his wife impacts the character. The Dad reflects and understands how his wife brought life to his house and by extension his life.

pg. 136

Many of the places the member of the mom's family went to search for her were connected important memories in their own life. For instance, Hyong-Chol rushes to Yongsan 2-dong office since it was his first job at the city (Pg. 70). Furthermore, these memories, linked together through setting, leads every character to reflect on their regrets and how their mom/wife impacted them in their own life.

Pampered Dad

The scene when the husband of the mother (I can't recall names) is taking care of his grandkids comes to mind. He is back at home where life is usually stable and monotonous. This time, however, he has to take care of his grandkids himself. His home would ordinarily be a comforting place, but his grandkids highlight his feckless. I felt both amused yet somewhat depressed that he didn't know exactly what to do with a rice cooker. He reminds me of a couple of the men in my family. They have been pampered their entire life, too. If you ask them to cook rice, they wouldn't know either. I sort of fear my own chances of living by myself. (Hey, I at least know how to cook rice)

The scene where people were at Tianamen Square and at the train station, people seemed to describe her in an opposite way than what her family thought. People described her as "slowly walking" when her family thought she was having a great time.

When Hyong-chol receives reports about his Mom in places where he used to live, he goes back to those homes and is flooded by past memories. Each home reminds him of his Mom and how he aspired to give her a room in his house ever since she had to sleep with him on the floor. She had taken care of him his entire life and he felt that he had let her down by not achieving his goal of becoming a prosecutor.

Lonelier Dad

When the Dad arrives back at home he is looking around at his house that he always had wanted to leave. He is home alone and thinks about how he had just forgotten his wife for years. Then he has an "epiphany" of sorts and realized how he had been overlooking the condition his wife had been in for all those years and he had been overlooking the importance she had on his life. The significance of this epiphany the father had is that the character reflects on all his actions and his personality changes. Instead of being distant and appearing unelected by his wife's absence the father breaks down. He becomes sorrowful and regretful. He like many of the other character's changes to wishing he could see his wife one more time.

pg. 130

The Younger Daughter's Epiphany (In the moment)

The younger daughter has an epiphany as she writes her letter to Chi-Hon on Pg. 237. The younger daughter's epiphany is set up through a tone of ambiguity; she repeatedly questions herself, "Was I a good daughter? Could I do the kind of things for my kids she did for me?" When she finally experiences an epiphany about her never being as good as her mom, she explains her realization with stern diction through phrases like "I know for one thing. I can't do it like she did." The younger daughter shifts her character through this epiphany as she finally acknowledges the struggles undergone by mom in order to provide for her children. Furthermore, the younger daughter reveals, through this epiphany, how little she really knows mom because of the way she neglected mom in the past.

The Younger Daughter's Epiphany (Set-Up, post epiphany)

The dialogue preceding the younger daughter's epiphany (described on the "in the moment" post) revolves around the younger daughter's regret in relation to her mom. Through this dialogue, she realizes that she "didn't know mom" (Shin 234). The younger daughter's sense of regret sets up for the epiphany as she is forced to reflect on her relationship with her mom and what her mom did for them in the past. When she finally realizes the tribulations overcome by her mom in order to provide for her children, the younger daughter changes as she finally acknowledges her mom's impact on everyone's lives and also the fact that she "can't give them my life like mom did" (Shin 235).

At one point, the daughter asks if her mother actually enjoys being in the kitchen. The daughter never really thought about her mother as a person that might want to do something else. The mother is indifferent to the fact that she's constantly working. She's accepted that fate. She is endlessly benevolent. Pg 55!
