Though much of this data is more than 10 years old, it is interesting to look at when discussing how the United States handles the costs associated with organ transplantation.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Only 3% of the NHS budget is spent on services related to kidney failure per year.

Dialysis costs an average of £30,800 per patient per year, whereas immunosuppressant medications cost £5,000 per patient per year.

On April 1, 2009, 6,920 patients were on the transplant waiting list, the majority of whom were on dialysis. The dialysis costs to the NHS were approximately £193 million per year. If each patient on dialysis received a transplant, the cost would be go down to about £41 million per year, saving the NHS £152 million per year.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It seems clear that transplants save the NHS money over the long run, versus keeping patients on dialysis. The focus in these statistics is not on how to pay for transplants but on how having greater organ supply will save the NHS money in the long-term.

The United States does not handle the costs associated with organ transplant services and needs very well. Because of how fragmented our health insurance coverage is between the public and private sector, the costs can vary depending on how the person is insured. However, even with insurance, some people may not be able to get the transplant because they cannot afford the necessary anti-rejection medications afterwards. This is an issue that doesn't come up in NHS statistics. Compared to the vast resources available to secure finances for transplantation in the United States, the NHS appears more focused on how getting more transplants will save the health care system money every year.
