This is a picture from the Montage 1968 yearbook. While looking through the yearbook I noticed that women were getting more involved in extracurriculars activities. It seems that activities or opportunities that weren’t open to women previously where now available.

2. Gymnastics

This is a picture from the Montage 1967 yearbook. Sports was mainly opened to men and women were allowed to watch from the sidelines. Allowing women to compete in gymnastics was a big deal but gymnastics was seen as a manly sport during this time. Women were allowed break some gender roles by being involved and taking up space in male dominated areas.

3. "Leap Week"

This is a picture from the 1968 Montage yearbook. I thought this was interesting because the men and women switch gender roles for a week. The students were aware of their own gender roles and how it played out in society. I wonder how leap week went and if students learned anything from it.

4. Faculty

This is a picture from the 1975 Montage yearbook. This picture includes female faculty such as assistant professors and instructors. If you look through the earlier Montage yearbooks, you don’t really see and woman in these positions. The positions that women had in the years before were secretaries and they were just doing office work.

5. Miss KJC Contest

This article is from The Sentinel Volume 3, No. 4. Obviously since this is for a pageant, they will be looking for the most beautiful women with the best qualities. As I was looking through one of the yearbooks, I noticed that the school was hosting another pageant at some point.

6. Woman defends herself

This article is from The Sentinel Volume 9, No. 11. When I came across this article it reminded me of what we talked about in class about sexual violence against women during the Civil Rights Movement. In the McGuire readings it mentioned how many black women faced sexual violence and when they would fight back, they would end up being charged and going to trial. In this article, Joanne Little is a black women who is facing execution because she defended herself.

7. Woman in Industrial Engineering

This picture is from the SPSU 1982 yearbook. As I was scrolling through the earlier versions of the SPSU yearbooks I realized that there weren’t really any women. As you browse through the years you can tell that women were more accepted into spaces that they weren’t before.

8. Equal Rights Amendment

This article is from The Sentinel Vol 13, No. 6. We have talked about the Equal Rights Amendment in class. The law was passed in 1950 and ratified in 1972. The passing of this law would be a big deal for women because it would give them access to bigger opportunities. Gloria Steinmen was a major supporter of the ERA. One of the reasons why she believed this amendment needed to pass was so wouldn’t suffer anymore whether it was due welfare, being homebound, or career wise. Based off the article it seems that students agreed with the amendment or at least open to it. This student who wrote the article also mentions that the mindset that women can’t do certain things would need to be unlearned.

10. Executive Round Table

This picture is from the SPSU 1982 yearbook. If you look through the earlier years of the SPSU yearbooks, you’ll mainly see men in the higher positions. I just thought it was interesting to see it completely flip to mostly women.

Final Reflection!

It was fun to look through the University’s archives! I found many interesting activities that happened like donkey basketball. It was also cool to see the progression of women being more involved on things in campus. I would say I feel a connection with the past students as from looking through the material they seem cool, fun, and engaging. This project was interesting because you could see how certain things, we talked about in class align with what students were doing at the time.
