Why People Need Poetry by Florangel Goble

Jamila Lyiscott is a “tri-tongued orator;” in her powerful spoken-word essay “Broken English,” she celebrates — and challenges — the three distinct flavors of English she speaks with her friends, in the classroom and with her parents. As she explores the complicated history and present-day identity that each language represents, she unpacks what it means to be “articulate.” Watch Jamila's video. After you are done watching the video write and post on this wall (double-click in open space next to video) why you think that poetry is important. How does Jamila use poetry? Why? What did you think of Jamila's poem?
After you written and posted your response on this padlet, take a screenshot and submit that (the screenshot) under the assignment you wish to replace with this activity. Please make sure your paragraph contains 6-8 sentences. If it does not contain 6-8 sentences, you will not receive credit.

Poetry is important because it is another way to humanly express ourselves. It provokes us to put our feeling into forseen words that you can only describe by example, (like how Jamila compared how she gets her 3 tongues of different english mixed up to how it is as she's cooking in a kitchen) allowing us to create a story out of emotion. The way this woman Jamila used poetry was by expressing herself. She felt that the way people talked was judged, which is true, for example, you'll often see critics these days on the internet correcting grammar often referred to as "Grammar Nazis". I think her poem was somewhat comedical but had as I said before true meaning of the criticize towards English tongue. And I complete agree with what she had to say, we should be entitled to talk how we want because at the end of the day it will all mean the same. There is no difference in it for the British as Jamila said, will continue to mock us for they they 'proper english', for as we will continue to talk in our more comfortable tongue.

Poetry is such a beautiful art and their are many reasons as to why it is important. Poetry is important to express emotions, memories, thoughts, etc. It allows a writer to fully express deep emotions on paper and put in a form of art. People need poetry because it allows for bottled up emotions, thoughts, and ideas to be brought to life in the simple form of poetry. In my opinion I think poetry is such a beautiful way to write and if I was any good at it I would definitely try it out. I’ve always loved to read poetry and read how a writer conveys their emotions.

They can express what their feeling where no one can judge them or tell them their wrong. Jamila uses poetry by telling it like it is a story or telling a memory/lesson and wanting the reader to know her thoughts and her actions. Jamila's poem was strong and eye-catching. The way she presented it was intriguing and distinctive. The way she brought together about bein articulate, with knowing three languages was smooth. And she was saying that our tones in the way we talk is in itself another language too. It was interesting seeing her explain the three different ways to speak English, and hoe she incorporated examples from what people she talks with daily and how she talks with them.

I believe that poetry is a beautiful form of communication that articulates a message to an audience. Jamila’s poem was powerful and the way that she presented it with passion allowed the audience to feel every word that she was articulating. Jamila was playful with her words and used them very carefully so that we the audience could follow her message. Her poem was about the three different languages of English she spoke and she spoke these different languages to fit into her social surroundings and adapt. She felt that this was needed for her culture because of her historical past and how her ancestral language were taken away. I really liked her poetry and the way she presented it, you could tell she is very artistic and I believe she did a good job communicating a topic that people don’t really think about

I feel poetry is important because its a way people can express their feelings, thoughts, and point of views freely. People being able to do so allows them to feel safe and it creates a safe bubble for themselves. Jamila uses poetry as a way for her to express to the reader things she had to go through by using word play, and expressing emotions that allow the reader to somehow feel connected to her by just reading her poem. Jamila wrote a very strong, beautiful, and important poem by simply expressing her views and life experiences. I personally don't `like to read books or poems but if there was one poem I could read everyday it would definitely be this one. I love the way she was able to express all the ways you can speak the English language by using examples of her everyday life. I like when people or writers in this case write a poem, movie, book or whatever but use their own life experiences to do so. The reason why is because it allows me to personally connect to them and feel what they are feeling and I enjoy reading poems like this.

Poetry is one of the many ways that we express what we think and how we feel. It’s a way of doing so but in a more eloquent and expressive manner! We see poetry used for various purposes: from praising someone such as the many poems in the book of Psalms that praise God, to expressing ones position about an important issue such as Jamila Lyiscott’s “Broken English” poem. In her poem, Jamila not only utilizes her articulate way of speaking English to joke around and make her audience laugh, but she also uses it to express her position on how she is judged based on how she looks and how she speaks. Jamila exclaimed “Cause the only God of language is the one recorded in the Genesis

Of this world saying “it is good"

So I may not always come before you with excellency of speech

But do not judge me by my language and assume

That I’m too ignorant to teach.” Here, Jamila masterfully uses poetic devices to maximize the impact that not only her tone but also the words she used has on her audience. Jamila exercised her poetic skills to teach us about the history and versions of English spoken nowadays, but to also teach us one valuable lesson: just because a person speaks with eloquence does not mean that person is better than a person who lacks that eloquence - Moses was REALLY bad at speaking, yet God used him for the groundbreaking event in history that was the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt!

I feel like poetry is a way of showing your emotions and a way of showing your emotions in a more creative manner. Jamila uses poetry by showing how she feels. She also shows her emotions by using poetic devices like Irony and Rhyme Schemes. Her poem really spoke out to me because of the meaning and of the poetic devices she used. She explains how she speaks english in different "languages" I didn't understand at first but when she started explaining it I instantly understood because I come from a similar background like her. Sometimes speaking english in a "hood" or broken way makes you look unpresentable and when you speak "perfect" english you're seen as a presentable person. Overall, I think Jamila's poem is very strong to the point where it makes you have chills and make yourself imagine what would it be like in her shoes. I've read other poems but Jamila's poem really touched me because I can kind of relate!

What she is trying to prove is that she could be speaking of the same thing in different accents and yet people would judge and ignore because of the way they sounded. I believe she was trying to get the audience to understand the idea she was forming by actually hearing it. She supported this by rhyming and using rhythm in several parts throughout the video. Her use of poetry loosened up the serious topic she was speaking about. It kept her audience engaged and entertained while they listened to her point of view. Jamila Lyiscott is a wonderful example as to why poetry is important. Many people see the word poetry and imagine a boring, old-fashioned man writing about the struggles of life. They don't see the beauty in expressing yourself through poems

I believe poetry is important because it's a way for the writer to express their feelings without having to really express them directly like in an essay. It's a creative form of writing by using tone, rhyming, and metaphors. Jamila uses poetry to express her feelings of the topic to her audience. The reason why she used poetry instead of another form of writing is because poetry sends her message more effectively. I really liked her poem and the way she expressed herself in the ted talk because you can hear and feel her emotions. Poetry is not for everyone but on some situations it is necessary because the way it is expressed catches the audience's attention.

Poetry can be beautiful and can be a way for someone to communicate things of their time. Poetry can be a way to express yourself, and I think that is what is happening in this video. Jamilia does a very good job at articulating her feelings that there is more than one way to be articulate. She uses rhymes perfectly placed so that it is still a poem but without distracting from her message. The tone of her poem does come off as angry, I know some may say it is passionate, but I think it is coming more from a place of anger and it reveals itself when she says, "I had to burrow your language because mine was stolen". I found it sad to be honest because it is clear she identifies herself less as American and more by race and you see it when she says, "you can't expect me to speak YOUR history holy when MINE is broken" and another example was "the reason I speak a composite version of YOUR language is because mine was raped away along with MY history". I think she is gifted but I don't agree with her massage, I think I would get in trouble if I greeted my teacher with "what's hood".

I feel like poetry is a set of words to describe the emotions from the writer and does not only have to be through poetry but mainly i feel like poetry is the best way to show it. Jamila uses poetry as a way to show off her emotions which spoke out to me because Jamila Lyiscott is a "tri-tongued orator;" in her powerful spoken-word essay "Broken English," she celebrates and challenges the three distinct flavors of English she speaks with her friends, in the classroom and with her parents. As she explores the complicated history and present day identity that each language represents, she unpacks what it means to be "articulate." Her use of poetry loosened up the serious topic she was speaking about. It kept her audience engaged and entertained while they listened to her point of view. Poetry is an important way to speak with emotions it delivers messages to deeply show how thw writer is feeling. Jamila Lyiscott is a wonderful example as to why poetry is important. Many people see the word poetry and imagine a boring, old-fashioned man writing about the struggles of life. They don't see the beauty in expressing yourself through poems. Poetry is just a beautiful way of feelings and emotion!

Poetry created with the right substance and the right ingredients can be something that is powerful and beautiful. There is also the adverse effect which is that it could be extremely hurtful and disgusting, but in a way that is secretly the beauty of it. Once you look deeper into it you see that it is true art, and with it being true art, there are so many different ways to decipher and dig deeper into the meaning that the author wanted to portray to their audience. The beauty of poetry comes from the difference in what people express once they put their pen to paper, we can see this by comparing Jamila Lyiscott’s piece “Tri-tongued orator” to say a “darker piece” made by Edgar Allan Poe and the “Monkey's Paw”. There's a drastic difference between what each person wanted to portray and even though the monkey's paw is dark and twisted it is still in a poetic sense beautiful. When you compare it to the “Tri-tongued orator” it is extremely more lighthearted, but even though it seems like that on the outside, once you go and do a deeper dive into the poem/word essay, the topic she's talking about effect’s a lot of people. When we compare the two poems you get to see is a beautiful artistic deviation between two people, both having something to portray but a different way of doing so.

Through poetry, people can convey their feelings and thoughts. I believe poetry to be a beautiful form of expression that effectively conveys thoughts to a readership. Jamila's passionate delivery of her poem allowed the audience to feel every word she said. To ensure that we, the audience, could comprehend what Jamila was trying to express, she utilized a gentle vocabulary. For the purpose of adjusting to her social surroundings, she penned a poem about the three various English dialects she used to speak. She believed that this was crucial for her culture because of her historical background and the disappearance of her original language. Her poems and delivery style were fantastic.
