2009 - expanded to more than 240 bureaus globally

available in seven different languages across all major TV, digital and mobile

platforms, reaching more than 425 million households in more than 200 countries

and territories. Its news and editorial operations were based in thirty-nine bureaus,

twenty-nine of which were outside the United States (CNN, 2016). CNN had

forty-two editorial offices and more than 1,100 affiliates worldwide through CNN

Newsource. Approaching its fortieth anniversary in 2020, CNN has remained in a

leading position.

Though CNN is watched by a relatively small proportion of viewers, they fall

into the category of what CNN calls 'influentials' - government ministers, top

bureaucrats, company chief executives, military chiefs, religious and academic elites

(Flournoy and Stewart, 1997). This is supported by the latest survey of international

news brands used by affluent elites. The Ipsos Affluent Survey Global in 2016 found

that CNN reached 36 per cent of affluent audiences across the world every month

via TV and digital services. For many non-Americans, CNN was and remains the

voice of the US government and corporate elite, despite its international presence,

its multinational staff (usually US-educated or domiciled) and its claims to be free

from US geostrategic and economic interests.
