Three Big Ideas Relating to Titus Kaphar

1) Finding order in the chaos: Kaphar’s work is inspired by social injustice, especially in terms of racial inequities. As can be seen in his work and philosophy, he makes sense of these situations through his unique style of art.

Starko, Chapter 5

2) Creativity does not happen in isolation: Through his work, Kaphar both responds to events and issues within society while challenging his audience to question their perspective. Through the selected links, you will see how Kaphar accomplishes this.

Starko, Chapter 4

3) Persuasion is necessary: Kaphar’s work is an exercise in persuasion. He creates very powerful images, as will be witnessed in his TED Talk or “Yet Another Fight for Remembrance.” These statements are persuasions for the audience to question the status quo of our world and how history remembers (or doesn't remember) people.

Dean Simonton interview
