“Now when I was a little chap I had a passion for maps. I would look for hours at South America, or Africa, or Australia, and lose myself in all the glories of exploration. At that time there were many blank spaces on the earth, and when I saw one that looked particularly inviting on a map (but they all look that) I would put my finger on it and say, ‘When I grow up I will go there.’

Marlow although he was a seaman he was different. The seamen lead a specific type of life. Their home was sea but for Marlow it was an opportunity of adventure and he goes believing everything the Europeans had told him. When he was at the company one of the woman seemed to observe him and made him feel uneasy indicating that he does not know what he is getting himself into. Later on, when he arrives he sees what is truly being done and he questions why is he there and why are his people there? What are they doing? He witnesses the total opposite of what he expected. He witnesses the slow progress of killing.

Marlow explains how when he was younger, he had a passion for maps and the unknown places. As he got older, those places became known. His description for his lust of exploration transitions to his story in Africa. As his story continues, his perception of colonization alters due to the reality of this location. He sees the opposite to what he was told about Africa.
