There is a mysterious atmosphere to the whole thing, leaving us with more questions than answers. This works well, as it mirrors what the characters are feeling.

The story takes place during the late fall and winter. In some parts of the story, the residents of Sunset Towers are snowed in, leaving them isolated. This forces both us and the characters to just focus on the game. Turtle discovers Sam's dead body on Halloween, making it even spookier. The seasons and weather play a role in the atmosphere of the story.

In Sunset Towers, everyone knows everybody but they don't understand everybody, and nobody is what they seem to be. This is further emphasized in the will, as the whole point is to figure out who is the murderer even though it seems like nobody there is capable of murder.

When the heirs go to the funeral, Theo and somebody else play a game of chess. This shows us that everyone is playing a game against someone who they don't even know. In chapter twelve, The First Bomb, Angela offers to help clean up after the explosion. While this could just be one of her acts of kindness, it could be her way of dealing with the guilt. On top of that she was also hesitant to call the fire department. Although the wouldn't have been able to reach Sunset Towers, why wouldn't she at least try to call? 

In chapter thirteen, The second bomb, it is stated that " The color striped candle would burn down to the fuse at six thirty; whoever was working there would be at the other end of the room. No one would be hurt." This single sentence gives two clues. The color striped candles are the ones Turtle made and sold. It is possible that Angela either bought or stole a candle from her sister. The fact that no one could get hurt is important too, as it shows that whoever the bomber is  is not interested in hurting others. This matches up with Angela's personality. This is further supported by her being devastated when Sydelle is hurt.

As far as motives go, I believe that Angela feels trapped by her mother and these bombs could be her way of displaying her pent up anger. Perhaps she isn't the perfect angel faced BOMBshell everyone makes her out to be.

While this sounds like your everyday mary sue, she is much much more than that. Although she is viewed as perfect, she doesn't like being seen as such. She wanted to be a doctor but was discouraged by her controlling mother. All of her frustration and anger manifests in her becoming a bomber. Guess she really was a BOMBshell. Take note in what her dream profession is. A doctor. This reveals to us that she is intelligent and wants to care for others as a living. This is apperant throughout the rest of the book. She is shown to be clever and helps out her partner and others around her. When her bomb does hurt Sydelle she feels terrible, she's compassionate. Later, when she gets a scar from her own bomb, she physically becomes what she wants to be seen as, imperfect. Her looks were what everyone first noticed about her and with that now "ruined", others must rely on her personality to truly judge her. She is strong while being feminine. This is most common in young children but anyone could have this crutch. Something that in their eyes defines who they are or comforts them in a way. For example, my crutch would be my long bangs. When they are out of my face I feel uncomfortable. Here are the crutches of some of the characters.

Angela Wexler: Her beauty. People define her by her beauty and when her face gets scarred she feels uncomfortable at first.

Turtle Wexler: Her braid. Everyone knows that she doesn't like her braid being touched and she and Flora bond by Flora doing her hair. When her hair is singed off she feels very sad.

Sydelle Pulaski: Her actual crutch. Sydelle is constantly looking for attention and the approval of others and her way of doing this is drawing attention to her disability with her colorful crutches.

Grace Wexler: Her money. When Grace is first touring Sunset Towers she already wants her apartment to define her, even wanting to print stationary just to show off.
