Accusative Quiz - der Akkusativ

I completed this link to test my understanding of the accusative case, which is the area I am finding most difficult in my studies at the moment. I took the test twice; I had difficulty in the second part of the quiz, where it asks you to pick out the noun that signifies the accusative; at first this was difficult as the word order was confusing, but after careful reading I feel like I understood it more. I had no problem signalling the articles in this exercise, although it was still good practise.

Listening Comprehension on Telling the Time - die Zeit erzählen

Embarrassingly, I first find it hard to tell the time in my native language so understanding it in German is proving a struggle. I will work hard so I can improve. I thought I should try listening first. This read out a particular time and I had to pick which was what the reader is saying out of 3 options. The first time I took this, I only got 38% right, so it shows how weak of an area this is for me. Impressively, the second time I got 88%! I did consult my notes here though most of the time it seems I understood the gist but sometimes I would be tempted to put 8.30 for halb acht, instead of 7.30, for example. I will work on this.

Können Test

I took this online quiz to test my application of the verb 'können'. This exercise involved taking the verb 'können' and applying it correctly to create a sentence out of the words that they provide you. See the top example, how the words 'ich - nicht so gut - können - tanzen' becomes 'Ich kann nicht so gut tanzen' - I can not dance very well. I did get a bit confused with certain word order sometimes as I am always compelled to translate literally the English word order in my head. I will work on this. I also experienced some technical difficulties here with it failing me if I put one too many spaces or the like, which was frustrating. Overall, I found this test helped my understanding on the application of the verb 'können'.

Duolingo Practice

I have been using Duolingo regularly to practice German. As good as it is helping me learn more and more vocabulary, it doesn't let me know much about certain rules or syntax that I need to understand, for example knowing about the capitalisation of nouns in German. Nevertheless, I am finding it good and useful practice. I am at level 2 having just completed the House 1 lesson, nearly finishing the lesson on conjunctions. I make sure to 'gold' every lesson by repeating them until I have reached the 'gold' standard to make sure I completely understand the lesson before I move to the next one.

I thought I would try something different and tried to read a newspaper article from the German newspaper 'Bild'. This article covered the new Banksy art in the Southampton General Hospital - 'So Banksy bedankt sich bei Corona-Helfern' - Banksy thanks Coronavirus heroes. Although I did not completely understand the whole vocabulary of the article, I definitely understood the gist of it - it probably also helped that I already knew of this news story.

Days of the Week - Tage der Woche

I did some exercises testing my understanding of the days of the week. I first did this test that asked me to order the days. I managed to get this right (technically). The order I did, placing 'Sonntag' at the beginning as the first day, was deemed to be incorrect by the website, although I always consider Sunday to be the first day of the week. Perhaps in German it is universally understood as Monday/ Montag?

I decided to try watching some YouTube videos covering certain issues I was confused about or needed reminding about. I found this YouTube channel really entertaining and informative, especially the videos on guessing the gender of nouns, which is something I struggle to remember. I made notes on all of the circumstances where 'der' 'die' or 'das' will likely precede a noun. Furthermore, I found the videos on possessive pronouns equally useful.

Listening Practice - Daily Conversation Activity

Here, I used a video from the YouTube channel 'Learn German with GermanPod101.com' which had 2 hours worth of German listening activity. This went through several listening exercises which would go as follows: the conversation will run between the speakers first without subtitles for myself to try to understand what they're saying, and then it will run through it again with subtitles in both German and English. I found this really useful! It went through several familiar scenarios - telling the time (a difficult one!), going to a restaurant and ordering food, and going shopping. Of course, it was a lot easier with the subtitles but I found myself being able to note certain familiar words and phrases I have been learning. Near the end I was quite confused about certain words that were new to me, like 'middle' (die Mitte) and 'corner' (die Ecke), but once I had listened with the subtitles I have now learned these words! For reference, I used the '20 Daily German Conversatons - German Practice for Absolute Beginners' video for this exercise!
