Since their inception, both the IDEA and ESSA programs have worked to create a more equitable and progressive educational progress for students matriculating through public education. Each program has worked tirelessly to identify and combat every factor negatively affecting the lives of children in an educational setting. These variables range from addressing and identifying the need of accountability from every stakeholder thats involved in the education process, to working to identify, locate and evaluate students who may have disabilities. The Every Student Succeeds Act, was signed into law in December, 2015. This act was created in an attempt to further commit to providing equal opportunities for students. Since then, the program has continued with such foundational principles as requiring all students to be taught to high academic standards, providing a better means to communication between schools and parents, and using available funds to promote innovative methods.

Along with the ESSA program, the IDEA program has devoted various resources to continuing its mission of helping to identify and effectively evaluate students with disabilities. Established in 2004, the IDEA program has required schools and community organizations to locate students with disabilities. Now, this might seem miniscule in nature, but it is monumental in action. In the text, it states, " The goal is to determine if there is evidence of a disability and, if so, to identify the full spectrum of educational services needed for the student to succeed in school settings." (McLeskey p. 36) Developing a long lasting program that can efficiently and effectively identify, locate, evaluate, monitor and assess students with disabilities are huge advantages in education. Furthermore, having these parameters guide educational legislation, are concrete steps in the race to establishing a fulfilling and systematic approach to an equitable education.

McLeskey, J., Rosenberg, M.
