These framed photos are art from the period. In all of the 10 internment camps, many people made small wooded birds from scrap wood that they would find. They would use metal scraps to carve the wood and then would paint it. Even though they never mention the carved bird pins in the book, Traci Chee wrote a lot about the character, Minnow. Minnow loves to drawing, and is mentioned to draw everywhere and everything.

The book, We Are Not Free, by Traci Chee, the book is set in the early 1940s. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, tensions are high. As discrimination against the Japanese increased, a new plan is put in place. All Japanese people of Japanese descent are to be evacuated from their homes and placed into internment camps. The story follows many POVS in which young characters describe the struggle of enduring such a transition. The book continues with the characters experiencing loss, love, and learning to stay strong together.

This image shows a Shakuhachi flute player and a young girl singing in July of 1945, at the Topaz concentration camp in Utah.

During this time, the government liked the idea of music being a big part of the camps, so they put a music department in every camp. They also hired many teachers to teach the people at camp and did musical activities. Surprisingly, they let Japanese music be represented in the camps. Mostly every art form practiced in Japanese American communities before the war continued on in many camps.

A connection to the book is how many characters in the story make connections with music in their chapters. Many of the characters such as Yum-yum, had a personal connection with music before being placed in the camp, and throughout the book you see her and many other characters related music with freedom and spirit. They also had music playing at the parties the camp held for them, and it played a big part in most of the scenes.

Traci Chee has not written another book like We Are Not Free or any other historical fiction book. This book is called A Thousand Steps into Night which she wrote. This is what the book is about, "In the realm of Awara, where gods, monsters, and humans exist side by side, Miuko is an ordinary girl resigned to a safe, if uneventful, existence as an innkeeper’s daughter. But when Miuko is cursed and begins to transform into a demon with a deadly touch, she embarks on a quest to reverse the curse and return to her normal life. Aided by a thieving magpie spirit and continuously thwarted by a demon prince, Miuko must outfox tricksters, escape demon hunters, and negotiate with feral gods if she wants to make it home again.
With her transformation comes power and freedom she never even dreamed of, and she’ll have to decide if saving her soul is worth trying to cram herself back into an ordinary life that no longer fits her… and perhaps never did." (Amazon) This is a fantasy book and it is clearly completely different from We Are Not Free. One similarity is that the main character(s) are of Asian descent.

Also, another similarity is that there were two camps that were mentioned in the books.

Some differences are that in the books are that in Night there was only one point of view, but in We Are Not Free there are multiple points of views shown.
