To make sure their souls were safe, rich Egyptians made sure their bodies were preserved after death. These preserved bodies are called mummies, and some are still intact today.   • First, wash the body in wine, then remove the internal organs (the brain, heart, liver and intestines) and put them in a jar, called a canopic jar.
  • Then, fill the empty body with a special salt called natron, to dry the body out. This process takes about 40 days.
  • When the body is dry, wash it again in wine, and fill it with sawdust and linen. Rub the skin with oil and perfume to make it smell nice, and varnish it with resin, to stop it from rotting.
  • Next, wrap the body in bandages. Put amulets between the bandages to keep the spirit safe on its journey to the Afterlife. Add a mask that looks like the person when he was alive.
  • Put the finished mummy into its coffin(s)
