"At times I felt like I was failing Maureen, like I wasn't keeping my promise that I'd protect her-the promise I'd made to her when I held her on the way home from the hospital after she'd been born. I couldn't get her what she needed most-hot baths, a warm bed, steaming bowls of Cream of Wheat before school in the morning-but I tried to do little things.
This GIF represents the quote because no matter how many little things Jeannette did for her sister it wasn't enough. she ended up moving to california by herself and there she is not protecting her.

"One thing about whoring: it put a chicken on the table." This GIF relates to the quote because it says that life finds a way and in the quote a mom is providing food for her family. Even though she is doing things that she probably isn't proud of by the way Jeannette sees it is that at least she is putting food on the table.

“Years from now, when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten, you'll still have your stars.” The way that I see this is loyalty because i see as if he is saying that after all is dead and gone the only real people you'll have is your family. They were the only ones that will be really there for you and that shows in the book. For example when Rex, pimped his daughter out she still loved him because no matter what she can't go and change her dad.

You should never hate anyone, even your worst enemies. Everyone has something good about them. You have to find the redeeming quality and love the person for that.” This quote right here simply says that no matter what someone does to you no matter how bad you should always have a reason to not hate the person. Instead you should learn to forgive and love that person. In the book Jeannette did this many time with her family mostly with her father and mother.

“I wanted to let the world know that no one had a perfect life, that even the people who seemed to have it all had their secrets.” This relates to the picture because it shows that she has accepted her life for what it is and now she is trying to make the best of it. She understands that what she has may not be the best but she does what she can to make the best of it. In the book she also says that people get the lives that they want and this show that she has accepted who she really is.

"I lived in a world that at any moment could erupt into fire. It was the sort of knowledge that kept you on your toes." This relates to the picture because knowing that your world can erupt at any moment then you'll have to be read to trust yourself especially in Jeannette case because her world can go from good to bad in a second. For that she is ready for it which having trust in herself because her parents won't do anything to make the situation better.
