A lady, named Dorothea Dix, agreed to teach Sunday school at a jail. Little did she know that this day would not only change her life, but history. She walked in to see children and people in chains and locked in cages. Children who were accused of minor thefts were charged with adult trials. She then made it a mission to find out if it was like this everywhere, she visited hundreds prisons around Massachusetts. Dorothea Dix was most shocked at how the mentally ill were treated. If you were considered "insane", you would get locked up in a dirty cell that was overcrowded. If you misbehaved, you would be whipped and punished. Dorothea Dix did not like this one bit. She believed that if you were mentally ill, you needed help and care, not to be locked up in a cell and punished. She gathered information on what she had seen. She then filed a report for the Massachusetts state legislature. It stated, "I come as the advocate of helpless, forgotten, insane and idiotic men and women," she said. "I proceed, gentlemen, briefly call to call your attention to the present state of insane persons, confined...in cages, closets, cellars, stalls and pens! Chained, naked, beaten with rods, and lashed into obedience!" At this, lawmakers voted to create public asylums for the mentally ill. Dorothea then went around to prisons in different states as well, and at this action, these states also made mental hospitals.
