The classroom environment can be shaped by the way you, as a teacher, set it up. One example in which this can be done is how you set up the desks. Ensuring that none of the students are obstructed from seeing the teacher or board where information may be present is one positive way to create a welcoming environment. Another simple way is to include posters that celebrate diversity. Having multiple cultures represented in the classroom is a great way to create a warm and welcoming environment. Somewhere in your classroom place the "Safe place" sticker so all the students know that they always have someone to come and talk to you about anything

In the science class teachers can perform lessons related to diversity and the multicultural aspects of their students and all people. This would come in a lesson specifically about human evolution and the teacher can explain how different cultures came into existence. Here is the NGSS standard for the human evolution, diversity, and unity.
HS-LS4-2. | Construct an explanation based on evidence that the process of evolution primarily results from four factors: (1) the potential for a species to increase in number, (2) the heritable genetic variation of individuals in a species due to mutation and sexual reproduction, (3) competition for limited resources, and (4) the proliferation of those organisms that are better able to survive and reproduce in the environment. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on using evidence to explain the influence each of the four factors has on number of organisms, behaviors, morphology, or physiology in terms of ability to compete for limited resources and subsequent survival of individuals and adaptation of species. Examples of evidence could include mathematical models such as simple distribution graphs and proportional reasoning.]

Stereotypes can be positive or negative, but regardless it puts on a burden on the student. Students with stereotypes from their teacher receive more or less attention depending on their specific stereotype. If you witness other students being stereotypical or rude to another student, talk to that student immediately that way all your students know that stereotyping is not tolerated at all in your classroom.

Even if we disagree with the student's sexuality, race, or opinion we must help guide them when they come to us for help. Always be willing to help them with their problem even if it something that you don't personally agree with. If the student chose to come to you, then it shows that they feel a sense of connection and trust with you. Also sometimes teachers are all the student may have to confide in.

According to Nieto and Bode (2012) when students don't have an attachment to the dominant culture they can feel as if they are being alienated. As a teacher it is important to let students feel appreciated regardless of identity. Nieto and Bode (2012) also explain that when a student identifies as a learner and feels connected to the school because of its acceptance of different cultures the students have a higher regard towards learning.

Understanding language issues even for a science teacher is crucial. Nieto and Bode (2012) point out that language problems alone are not the reasons that some English language learners struggle in their academic achievement. By having ELL students engaged in the class readings it will promote their English development.

Over the past 50 years, children encountered cultural disrespect to their names in classrooms all over our country (Kohl & Solorzano, 2012). Today, many teachers give some of their students nicknames if their original name is too difficult to pronounce. Unfortunately the teacher and other students do not see the disrespect this means towards that particular student. When the teacher chooses an easier name for a student, the teacher is showing that their culture is too unimportant to learn. As teachers, we need to show respect for all the cultures present in our classroom and that begins on the first day going through roll and making sure each name is pronounced correctly.

In the textbook book Nieto and Bode (2012) point out that by using science to study genetics with the ability to understand how human traits are passed down all students will feel included and their backgrounds are unique. By showing students the reasons for different traits and how they are passed down they will have a better understanding of the reasons for different cultures. Studying these things from a science perspective gives students an opportunity to put away any prejudices or reservations they may have and understand diversity on a differnt level.

Just because you are nice to a student does not mean you are an effective multicultural educator. In order to be an effective multicultural educator, you must care about the students as an ongoing process. Multicultural educators must treat all their students the same regardless of skin color. When teachers are too nice to certain students, you are not teaching them the proper way. As teachers we should not enforce the culture that dominants the school, instead we should teach the students to love and share their culture at school rather than hiding it. If the school system hides the minority cultures, then those students will begin to hide their own culture at school. Being nice and telling them to act a certain way or do a certain thing is wrong, being nice does not support multicultural education (Nieto, 2009).

She goes on to state that it's important for teachers to use concrete forms of respect to create a positive relationship. The teacher is responsible for making their students comfortable and having a positive relationship with them will help the students be engaged in classroom activity and hopefully strive to become better students. Teachers have a profound affect on students that can last for years. It's important as a teacher to try and conduct a positive, fair learning environment

You should never look at a student and think "There is no point in trying because they have already given up."

At times there could be students with learning disabilities in your classroom. The main thing you should always keep in mind is to remain patient with these students and never become frustrated with them if they can't do something that seems like it should be easy. There are many different types of learning disabilities students that can be in your classroom. Sometimes you will have students who are deaf or blind and sometimes you may have students who are autistic or have ADD/ADHD. Although these students may need different accommodations, each of these disabilities have their own different strengths. When teaching students with learning disabilities it is important to be keeping in mind their individualized education program (IEP) goals. As the teacher you must make sure you are constantly communicating with their special needs teacher in order to make sure all goals and accommodations are being met (Rosenberg, Wrestling, & McLesky, 2008).
