1914- The first Canadians die in action during First World War

In the Battle of Coronel fought off the coast of Chile, four midshipen of the Royal Canadian Navy went down with the British flagship. Inevitably making them the first canadians to die during the First Worlds War.

1915- "In Flanders Fields" Composed

John Mcrae of Guelph, ON, wrote the famous poem "In Flanders Fields". This poem is very significant to Canada, and so many Canadians. An annuel recitation of this poem is presented, keeping those who fought during WWl remembered.

1917- Battle of Vimy Ridge

This strategic victory was the first time all four divisions of Canadian corps fought together as one formation. On Easter Monday, This Victory sensed a new National Awareness for Canada. There was a loss of 3578 soldiers, and 7000 wounded.

1939- World War ll Begins

World War ll began when Adolf Hitler sent the German army into Poland. During this same year, Canada had declared war on Germany.

1941- Women enlist in Army

The Federal governent passed legislation that allowed women to enlist in the army. For the first time in Canadian History where they were able to serve during war in uniform. Over 50,000 women served in armed forces, WWll.

1941- Japan attacks pearl harbour

Major event in history that occered during the first world war. The Japenese launched a surprised attack on Unitied states Naval base at Pearl Harbour, resulting in significant damage, and the U.S entering WWll. Post event, Canada declared war on Japan. Shortly after, Japanese Canadians were stripped of their home and businesses, and sent to internment camps.

1950- Canadian Army Special Force Established

The Canadian Army Special Force was established in August 1950 for the service in the Korean War. After additional preperations in Korea, our solidier reached the front lines in February 1951. Korea was a very difficult place to fight.

1953- Cold War Deep Freeze

East-West negotiations on the future of Europe broke down and stopped. Canadians were involved with the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a western security pact designed to defend western Europe against Soviet invasionl; and the Korean War. Canada fought with the United Nations against communist North Korean and chinese forces.

1957- Korean War (Peacekeepers)

More than 26,000 Canadians served in Korea, during both combat phase and as peackeepers afterwards. The last Canadian soldiers left Korea in 1957. After the two World Wars, Korea remains Canada's third-bloodiest overseas conflict. It took the lives of 516 canadians and wounded more than 1,000.

Tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union escalated due to the Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. Canada played a crucial role as the mediator between the two superpowers. The canadian prime minister supported the united states' response to the crisis. Canada maintained peacekeeping efforts during the Cold war.
