3. Meaning of reading technique SQ3R :

RECALL: try to answer question without referring to the text or notes
REVIEW: review the material by rereading parts of the text or notes to verify answers

Meaning:Moving your eyes quickly down a page or list to find one specific detail. Scanning allows you to locate quickly a single fact,date,name or word in a text without trying to read or understand the rest of piece. How:

3)    SQ3R (DEFINITION) 

 This technique was developed by Robinson (1961) to help the students during studying content material. This technique is rather versatile and effective, which helps the students in pre-reading, during-reading and post-reading. This self-monitoring process helps in enhancing comprehension and information retention.

We scan in order to locate specific information in a given passage. Scanning is also useful to find specific name, date and/or fact without reading the whole passage. 
There are a few steps to be taken during scanning.

 Skim to get overall idea and we ignore the details. We can find main ideas normally from first sentence of each paragraph as well as in the first and final paragraph. Skimming from first line of a paragraph can also help you in formulating questions to keep you interacting with the text.

 (Read) = Read one at a time, make note of anything that you do not understand. = read to answer the purpose questions formulated in Step 2, Question = Take note of the answers found in the text. = Re-read if the text is complex.
(Recall) = Run through the details in mind several times after you are done reading. = Identify the important points and work out how other information fits around them. = Try to answer questions formulated in Step 2 without referring to the text or notes. = This step helps in transferring information from short-term to long-term memory.
 (Review) = Review the material by rereading parts of the text or notes. = You can also discuss the materials with someone else as comprehensively as you can. (put the information into meaningful context) = Then, verify answers given during Step 4, Recall. = This helps retain information better and gives immediate feedback = Schedule regular review of the materials to keep it fresh in mind

How to Scan There are a few steps to be taken during scanning. Firstly, know what you are looking for, by having clear image of the information you need, it is much easier to scan for information. Then, anticipate in what form the information will be – numbers, figures, etc. Analyze the organization of the content before scanning; if the text is brief, scanning can be done in single search and if the text is lengthy, scan the article for few times. Let your eyes run rapidly over the lines quickly and once you have found the details, read the whole sentence. During scanning, you will normally skip a large section of text without reading or understanding them. Scanning is actually a fast mental process as you can scan up to 1500 words per minute.

The first step, survey or skim, advises that one should resist the temptation to read the book and instead first go through a chapter and note headings, sub-headings and other outstanding features, such as figures, tables, and summary paragraphs. This survey step only takes 3-5 minutes, but it provides an outline or framework for what will be presented. The reader should identify ideas and formulate questions about the content of the chapter.

Generate questions about the content of the reading. For example, convert headings and sub-headings into questions, and then look for answers in the content of the text. Other more general questions may also be formulated:

Use the background work done with "S" and "Q" in order to begin reading actively. This means reading in order to answer the questions raised under "Q". Passive reading, in contrast, results in merely reading without engaging with the study material.

The second "R" refers to the part known as "Recite." The reader should try to retrieve from memory what was learned in the same manner as telling someone else about the information. It is important that the reader use his/her own words in order to formulate and conceptualize the material. Try recalling and identifying major points (heading/subheadings) and answers to questions from the "Q" step. This recital step may be done either in an oral or written format and is related to the benefits of retrieval (testing effect) in boosting long-term memory for the material.

The final "R" is "Review." Once you reach the end of the passage, say back to yourself what the point of the whole passage is - again, using your own words.
4)SCANNING AND HOW TO SCAN?
Scanning is a reading technique to be used when you want to find specific information quickly. In scanning you have a question in your mind and you read a passage only to find the answer, ignoring unrelated information.

* State the specific information you are looking for.

* Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues you might use to help you locate the answer. For example, if you were looking for a certain date, you would quickly read the paragraph looking only for numbers.

* Use headings and any other aids that will help you identify which sections might contain the information you are looking for.

* Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage.
5)SKIMMING AND HOW TO SKIM?
Skimming refers to the process of reading only main ideas within a passage to get an overall impression of the content of a reading
selection.

How to Skim:
* Read the title.* Read the introduction or the first paragraph.
* Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.
* Read any headings and sub-headings.
* Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.
* Notice any italicized or boldface words or phrases.
* Read the summary or last paragraph.
