It happened as a result of the conflict arising between the Northern States who wanted to stop slavery and the Southern States who majorly relied on Slavery and its support to the agricultural economy. Major battles you've probably heard of would be Gettysburg and Antietam which resulted in a huge number of deaths. The role of President Lincoln played a huge role in guiding the Union army to victory, while Robert E. Lee was the general to the army. Later on, The Emancipation Proclamation was signed and issued in 1863 which led to the abolition of slavery.
