Before becoming president Grant was the U.S. general, commander of the union army. He was elected in the year 1868. Grant faced Horatio Seymour in the election. Grant won 214 electoral votes while Horatio Seymour, who he ran against, won 80. Grants party was republican.&nbsp;His vice presidents were Schuyler Colfax and Henry Wilson. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The first major event was the passing of the fifteenth amendment. This took place on March 30, 1870. The new amendment stated, "no state shall deprive any citizen of the right to vote because of 'race, color, or previous condition of servitude'". The second major event was the creation of the Department of Justice which took place on June 22, 1870. The Department of Justices purpose is to enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States. The third major event was the Civil Rights Act of 1875 which took place March 1, 1875. This act gave all African-Americans equal rights in public places and prohibited their exclusion from jury duty. Lastly, the fourth major event was Senate accepting the Compromise of 1877 which took place on March 2, 1877. This compromise settled the election and ended the reconstruction era. &nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After presidency Grant worked with a financial firm which ended up bankrupt. Soon after he found out he had throat cancer. Knowing his time was coming to an end he payed off all his debts, provided for his family, and rushed a memoir that was very successful. Grant passed away on July 23, 1885. Among all the presidents Grant was ranked 22nd overall. </div>]]></description>
