The war official started on October 7, 2001 and ended August 30, 2021. The early phase of the war was mainly Al-Qaeda and the Taliban versus the US, the northern alliance, and 1000 US special Forces. The main reason they went to war was because of the Al-Qaeda attacks on the United States Trade center and the pentagon. (CFR, An International Mission 1st paragraph)

The Taliban was a group of individuals that basically ruled Afghanistan and provided sanctuary for Al-Qaeda. They were the ones who planed and executed the attacks on 9/11. They hijacked 4 planes with a team of 20 members and ended up killing approximately 3000 people. Afghanistan endured 64 suicide attacks, a tactic that had virtually unknown in any other countries in history before. Al-Qaeda held naive beliefs about the US in the run up to the attacks and have little information on why. (Britannica Paragraph 1)
