Personal Reflection

I chose to research Tourette Syndrome because I feel like the disability isn't discussed as much as it should be. I also recently discovered that one of the musicians that I listen to has Tourette (Billie Eilish), which made me more curious about it. Through my research, I learned that the disability is much more common than what I had previously thought. I also learned that boys with the inherited gene are 3x more likely to display symptoms of Tourette's. Another interesting thing that I learned is that there is a wide variety of different tics that someone with Tourette's can experience, that aren't only vocal tics. Lastly, I learned that the basal ganglia is that part of the brain that is responsible for tics. I think that a lot of teenagers have a lot of misconceptions about Tourette Syndrome, which is why it is incredibly important to educate yourself to avoid accidentally offending someone. If more people understood the disability and how it affects kids, then I feel like people would be a lot more understanding and respectful when they encounter someone with Tourette's.
