1. Do your parents want you to follow in their footsteps in terms of career? How do you feel about parents putting pressure on their children to do this?
My parents have always put pressure on me to succeed, but they have never pushed me onto their path. My parents were both very successful in life and they want me to be even more successful than that, but they do not care how I achieve it. They encourage me to expierence all different ways of learning such as arts, sports, stem, etc. A child should never be forced to follow their parents path, becuase it does encourage them to step outside their norm of expertise. If all kids inherited their parents job the world would be full of people who were not happy where they were, and could give the world their brilliant ideas.
2. Who are your hero’s and how do they influence you?
When asked this question it is difficult to pinpoint only a few people, because to be honest my heros manage to change daily. For example, one day my hero could have been Batman and then I would have realized that was foolish and changed it to someone intelligent like Albert Einstein. However, at the moment, I would have to say my hero is not just one person but a group of people who are fighting to change the world. I live by their examples as they fight to stop world hunger of preach that women need an education. These people who are engaged in world problems stand as representatives or heros for young people like me. They inspire us to change our world, to change our ways, and to use metal straws. My hero can not be assigned to one person instead to a mass of like minded people who are trying to change the world for the better.

How does Sonny feel about Family

In the book, Rocket Boys, by Homer H. Hickham Jr., Sonny believes that family holds restrictions. Sonny grows up under his “perfect” older brother, Jim, and has always had the pressure of his successful father to drag him away from his true interests. These factors have caused Sonny to resent family, because he has always been pulled to follow in the path of coal mining; although, unlike his relatives Sonny contained a potion for science, for rockets. The only person in Sonny’s family who supported his escape from coal was his mother, but other than that Sonny wasa trapped. After being caught with rockets Sonny’s father tossed the supplies into the river and announced “Collect Satamps, catch frogs, keep bugs in a jar, do whatever you want. But no more rockets” (Hickham, 95). Sonny is not allowed to continue his passion of exploring the science of rockets because he “struck down” by his fathers thought that it is foolish and immature. This is one way that family is holding Sonny back from escaping the pattern. His father’s views on right and wrong restrict Sonny from discovering a way out of Coalwood. This restrictiveness and lack of individuality is what kept coal mining in the chain for so long. Coal Mining was meant to stay in the family chain, it was the family business and sons were expected to take over and daughters were expected to marry in, this hampered Sonny’s escape. Looking back on the family chain Sonny notices that “ [his] father’s two brothers were also miners, [and his] Dad’s sister, Bennie, Coalwood miner. . . But the fact that all her family, and my father’s family, were miners did not impress my mother” (Hickham, 12). This continuous pattern in Sonny’s family is what is causing him to feel trapped. It is almost like a song where the tunes is continuous and one wrong note could disrupt true song; Sonny is that one wrong note. Sonny’s restriction is fear of angering his family, and being a disappointment, if he did not have this fear he would be able to discover himself and stop the chain of miners. Sonny believes that family is a restriction, and that they hold him back from escaping coalwood.

Memoir #2: COMPLICATIONS

Success is important for my family it always has been, you are expected to be great and when your not it’s disappointing. For me personally the one person I care to impress is my mother. Usually when I address her I call her mom or mommy, but for my entire life when we talk about success I address her as mother. Ever since I was a child I remember long conversations about grades and how important they were, as well as the impact they could have on your future. I had always gotten great grades I had a 4.0 for seven semesters, but that was never enough. Some how my mother wanted me to get even higher, and I always allowed this pressure because it made me better, I thought. Although, one day I got home to a angry mother waiting, sadly she had my grades pulled up. And there it was my very first B. I smiled at her, but I knew it would not help. “ So it would appear we’ve kicked it into arm chair mode” my mother said. Arm chair mode was a phrase she used to tell me when I was being lazy and that I wasn’t working hard. “ It’s an honors class, so it’s still an A” I reply. Although this didn’t change her facial expression. For the rest of the night I was told that I could do better and that i had to do better. All my bad grades were pointed out, even my 96 in religion, apparently I could do better. Don’t get me wrong I love my mom, but my mother well she’s a tough one. My mom and me are great friends, but my mother and I that’s a different story. At the end of the night she kissed me on the forehead trying to make amends, and she had the audacity to tell me “ I’m not doing this for me I’m doing it for you and your future.” I wanted to scream “ You have been doing this for you, and so have I” but my words fell short. Instead i just softly whispered “ I know, . . . Thank you.” “Good Night” my mom said, but that sentence was soon followed up with the wrath of my mother and she remarked “ hopefully you will get the grade up.” I sat on my bed wondering if she truly was doing this for me, and i knew partly she was. She paid for my education and other things, but the yelling and screaming that wasn’t for me that was for her. So instead of saying thank you every time my mother helps me, I hand her a report card that says 4.0, but if I can’t supply that I say good bye to my mom and instead i say hello to my mother. The one thing I wish for is to impress my mother, but until that day comes I will work harder and harder, improving myself and continuing to face the unimpressed face of my wonderful mother.
