This is a video of the dance we will be performing for our H20 project. We will be performing this within our piece wearing outfits inspired by this movie for example, cowboy boots and hats. We have chosen this video to recreate as it really stood out to us when we thought of America, therefore we collectively thought this was a good idea.

This is a video from our first week of rehersals. We all decided to work on the routine we had chosen for America. This is one of the routines we have picked for this country, as we have chosen another song/ routine to do as well as this one. For this routine we have inspired it by the Dallas cowboys cheerleaders and there half time performances, for this routine we are going to be using props such as pom poms and cowboy boots and potentially a hat as well. We will be spending more lessons rehearsing this routine and making it look identical to the actual performance, however, we will be adding our own little swing onto the end of the routine to make it different. The group members that are included in this routine will be Ruby, Millie, Kendra and Iris. Our initial idea was to have all of us in the routine however we since then figured that it would be too much for Gracey due to her long term injury.

This is a video of us rehearsing and creating the ‘footloose’ inspired dance. We used this session to create the America section of our performance so we can start making progress. We used the choreography from the original film so the audience can get a clear idea of what country and film this is from. We will continue to work on this so it is clean and professional for our final performance in May. Although we have to deal with injuries, Gracey had decided she wants to be part of this dance as it won’t cause too much pain to her knee. However her will assess this closer to the performance.

This was our first idea as we wanted to be able to use a variety of styles in our performance to highlight our strengths. Furthermore, We wanted to represent the differences in our culture through the use of dance and costumes. As this was our first idea we decided to stick to this concept because we decided this would be the most suitable for our group as this will really display our stylistic design and how we can convey this through diversity and culture.

We chose this song to represent Jamaica as it coveys the country in its own vibrant and unique manner. We wanted to highlight the beats in this song as a lot of Jamaican music have these characteristics as well as powerful voices. Therefore, our movements had to match this, we used strong movements with a mixture of dancehall to capture the culture or jamaica and the way they dance. Once we had completed this piece we cleaned and refined any parts that needed going over to insure everything worked properly.

For this dance we wanted to represent South Africa, after researching different genres of music from this country we decided to do the song Jerusalema by Master KG, Nomcebo Zikode and Burna Boy. Me and Ruby decided that house was the most suitable style for this section as it is a very upbeat and vibrant song and so our movements had to match this in order to convey this country in the most creative way possible. After developing this motif we used our rehearsal time to clean and refine any parts that looked unprofessional. This can be seen in our weekly logbook videos where we gradually build on our choreography for each dance so we can be ready for our final performance.

For this dance we wanted to represent America. After researching about different dances across America. I then thought about what is an iconic dance scene out of a film/musical etc. I then thought of Footloose. Also whilst going with this film and music it was a different genre of dance completely to what we were doing during the show. Line dancing is a genre of dance that no of us had done so it was also something that was challenging for us. This film really shows the country part of America. And so I went with the idea of doing the choreography off of that. I watched a tutorial on YouTube and we just started with that. After working on it for a while we found that out of the dances it is one of our favourite parts of the show

When editing the music i asked kendra to screenrecord all the music we needed and the right timings so i could edit it all together. When editing them together i faced a couple of challenges such as the timing needed to be changed. For example millie and ruby’s duet needed to be longer so i had to go back and change all the timings so that it was perfect.

This is the opening country for this performance and so this needs to be strong and professional in order to set the standard for the whole show. Furthermore, we decided on the song as a collective as we felt the sassy and jazzy characteristic of this song fit our styles very well. Me, Iris and Ruby choreographed this piece as this was a day when Kendra was absent from rehearsal and so we decided to use our time in a productive and proactive manner so we could continue to develop or performance ready for our final production.

I knew I wanted to do the Dallas cowboys cheerleaders opening number before a game called thunderstruck. This peace is so empowering. We watched the clips of it on YouTube.

In this rehearsal we went over the dances we created in past session in order to ensure everyone still knew the choreography and we could perform it to a high standard. We did this by watching back videos to evaluate what we needed to work on and if anything needed changing in order to improve our over all production. Once we had achieved this we started to build onto our work by starting the next country which was England. For this one we decided to do the song Let’s Get Ready To Rhumble by PJ & Duncan. We decided as a collective that this was the most suitable song for this section as it is a very popular and well known song in England. Therefore, this will make it more enjoyable for our audience as it gives them a sense of nostalgia. However, this edition is quite short, this is due to us having 3 sections for England and so we wanted to make sure we have time to represent all aspects of the culture in the most professional manner.

In this session we were missing Kendra and so we decided we were going to work on the opening of our performances which is where we are sat on the plane going to our first country, France. We chose the song Lady Marmalade as a group when we initially started to create our piece as Moulin Rouge is a very popular musical which is set in France and so we felt this was perfect. Furthermore, this really highlights our strengths within jazz and so this pushes our opening to be as strong and professional as possible. Me, Iris and Ruby worked as a collective to create this section with the use of jazz and elements of commercial. We then recorded this in order to ensure we could practise this in the future and use it as evidence of our progression. Next week we will recap our work and teach Kendra the movements so we are all caught up ready for the show.

In this session we created the very first section of our performance where we are sat on the plane going to the first country which is France. We wanted to be able to convey this idea in the most transparent and clear manner possible so it was obvious to the audience what we were trying to achieve. I think we managed to create this vision with the use of audio and choreography. For example, the audio is from a plane as you are taking off and we used the chairs to represent us sat on the plane waiting to take off. Once we had completed this section we drilled the movements so everything looked clean in order to set a professional tone for the rest of our performance. In the second half of the session Iris worked on the editing of the music whilst me, Ruby and Kendra continued to research different songs and build onto our Padlet page.

These are the timings for the lighting we want for our performance and what colours we desire at certain points. For example, we decided that in between the dances where the plane audio is we wanted it dark so we could move any props that may be needed to be taken on and off stage. We spoke with James, the technician, to see what would work best for our performance and if our plans are suitable. Furthermore, Kendra’s mum has epilepsy, and so this is something we have had to be extremely mindful of in order to ensure the safety and security of our audience.

Voice memo- Meeting with James

In this voice memo we are discussing our initial ideas with James and what our performance is based on. This is so James can get an insight on what sort of things we may require in order for this production to work successfully and professionally. For example, the lighting and sound and how we would match these videos up with everything so our performance runs smoothly. Furthermore, we went through what kind of lights we wanted and if it would be possible to have multiple blackouts as these counted as light queues. As we have multiple countries we wanted to use different lights for each one in the colour of the flag (e.g. France as red white and blue) so the audience can see the difference. We also had to highlight the health and safety of our audience members as some have epilepsy and so we need to ensure our videos and lighting are suitable.

Originally, this was Gracey’s solo but due to her on going knee injury she will be unable to perform in our unit H project. However, we had a contingency plan in place just in case this ever occurred and so we decided as a collective that I would stand in for Gracey and do her solo. It starts as a freestyle solo where I will be waving and using body isolations with a range of techniques in order to highlight the songs beats. Then at the chorus Ruby comes in and we do a duo until the end of the section. Furthermore, this section is based on a majority of Hip Hop moves such as Smurfs, Running Men and Rooftops. This part is very dynamically centred and so the movements used need to correspond with the song in an effective manner. We will continue to go over this dance in order to ensure it remains at the front of our minds ready for the performance.

For this section we wanted to highlight English Hip hop and how it shaped the future of street dance with the help of music. We decided to use the song Rhumble by PJ & Duncan as this is a very well known song in the UK and so we thought this was the most suitable choice. We then chose to do Breaking as the style of dance as this matches the song. We used movements such as Kick Step Taps, Threads and Cee Cee’s. Once we had completed this section, we drilled it mutiple times and then recorded it so we could go over it ready for our next rehearsal. Furthermore, we could also evaluate whether there is anything we may need to change in order to improve our performance. A video of us rehearsing this section can be found in the Logbook section of this Padlet page.

All of us come from different dance backgrounds of styles. And we really wanted to capture that and show that through our unit H piece. For example Iris’ style that she has trained in for the longest and is most comfortable in is tap so for her piece we all knew straight away she should do a tap piece. The same goes for Millie and her being a street dancer we let her have freedom over her routine and how she wanted it to be.

As soon as we had decided on our show being dancing round the world I knew straight away that I wanted to do a routine based off of this one.

When thinking about costumes for America we knew we had to cowboy inspired or related routines so we had decided we wanted to dance in cowboy boots. I then spent that lesson searching the internet for cowboy boots that weren’t overly expensive as we would be paying for these. I then eventually found them on Temu for £9 so we ordered these and practiced with them and it went really well. It is really difficult to dance in cowboy boots as they are a lot heavier than a regular shoe so you have to work twice as hard to kick your leg up or move it in a certain way

Ruby was sporty spice so she wore trackie bottoms and a sports bra. I was ginger spice so I found a Union Jack dress. Millie was baby spice so she wore a pink tassel and sequined dress. Iris was posh spice so she wore all black to show that’s who she was. I believe that by choosing these costumes we accurately portrayed each spice girl individually.

Instead of scrapping that routine all together as he music had already been edited in we went with Millie performing the first half as a solo and then later ruby would join her for a duo. This worked really well.
