Answer: In terms of design, there are two methods of communication. Verbal and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication can be in the form of text or words. While, non-verbal communication is made up of predominantly visual forms of communication such as logos or images. Both of these methods of communication play a predominant role in design. For example, in a website you will be using verbal communication for the textual information that you want to express, meanwhile, non-verbal communication may be used in the colours, images or symbols that you add to said website to enhance its overall message. Both methods of communication are equally important for design.

Answer: Design is essentially the process of solving a problem with a solution. This involves communication. It involves the communication of your ideas in the form of your product. For your product, which may be digital or physical, to be successful you must effectively communicate your ideas and messages for your target audience to grasp and apply the message and better their life. Communication is also important for your target audience to understand how your product works. It must be easy to use and therefore you must communicate how it must work to an outside perspective regarding their background, understanding, needs, etc.

Answer: The strongest modes of communication in the digital world are systems. Systems require an input, to which they will provide a necessary output according to the input provided. A simple example of this is coding. Coding involves typing up code in a certain language and allowing the system to process it and provide an output.

Answer: Interpretability is the quintessential reason for communication. Without your subject properly interpreting your message your communication is inevitably ineffective and useless. Therefore for your message to reach its intended audience in a clear manner you must adapt it to the interpretability of your target audience.

Answer: It depends on the context. Textual communication is best for direct communication. However, if you want your message to be more subtle then yes symbols are a good option. The best way is to combine both however, make sure to be direct and inoffensive with the symbols you use as they are more likely to be wrongly interpreted.
