It is planned and recorded for a specific purpose which is to sell the product in their country.

-Tenor: the video involves primarely two people; Jason Kelce and Vince Wilfork. They are both retired players of American football and seem to be close friends now that they are both retired players but they were once rivals. Moreover, other participants that both affect and are affected by the add are the media, the filming team, the editors and the audience from the screen.

-Mode: It is spoken language but also a scripted speech as they might be following a dialogue previously written. In other words, the conversation itself is spontaneous but the content and order is actually planned by the producers since it is an advertisement.

-Register: they use coloquial language, contractions and friendly and everyday phrases through which they denote informality. It is a conversation between friends so it is casual and fluent.

For instance, they refer to each other as buddy, fella and friend, use contractions like don't, that's, isn't and it's and informal words such as bucks.

The video apppeals to friendly emotions since it is a conversation between two friends. We'll analyse and quote some sentences or phrases they say and the meaning they convey:

“Welcome to retirement buddy”:

-Buddy is an informal way to refer to a very close friend. This is also a marker of American english. Moreover, by this phrase, Vince is also kindly welcoming Jason to the world of retired players.

"Where's the shirt? -We don't wear shirts, Jason"

-This phrase could be interpreted as a joke since Vince says that refering to the team jersey they do not wear anymore since they have both retired. Instead, Vince hands him an overall to wear.

"You look like a million bucks”:

-It is a way of saying that something or someone looks extremely good. It is similar to the expression "look like a million dollars", but Vince might have decided to change the word dollars by bucks to convey informality.

"Smell of greatness":

-It refers to the smell of triumph they feel as they cook the barbecue.

"King of the grill":

-Jason says it to himself in order to feel important as regards grilling. He is describing himself as the king of the grill maybe because he was the king of the American football. What is more, the phrase denotes certain struggle with their rivalry.

"Barbecuing is not just about the food, it’s a way of life":

-This phrase basically equates grilling to a lifestyle. Although the phrase carries a comedic tone, it is supposed to be taken somewhat seriously to some extent. It could be interpreted as the slogan that most brands have. This is shown at the end of the commercial where it says that grilling is about "having a good time".

"Im your grasshopper":

-This is a reference to a popular show from the 70s: Kung fu. The use of a reference shows an attempt to be relatable to the average and older audience. It is an example of backround and knowledge since not everyone might understand this reference. Moreover, the grasshopper denotes the lowest level of Kung Fu with regards experience and talent, so we can infer that Jason describes himself as a beginner with regards grilling, and that Vince would be his instructor or teacher.

"You just lean with it. Bam! Alright !Bam bam bam!":

-The phrase is said by Vince to suggest the sound of the rhythm when he is kind of teaching Jason to dance, meaning he needs to do this ritual when cooking the barbecue to add emotion and also give some personification to the grill.

The video is an advertisment of grilling, and is promoted by 2 retired American players who are also very famous celebrities.

The ad aims to appeal to a primarely american audience as it portrays grilling as an staple product in american culture and uses the players to do so.

-Articulatory phonetics: on the one hand, Vince does not talk so crearly since there are some obscured or not easy to spot words in the speech.

Jason on the other hand, talks much more clearlier and it is easy to follow everything what he says.

Furthermore, altough they are both North Americans, Vince seems to use a regional variation since he is not as clear as Jason when talking.

-Prosody: they talk relatively fast as they have an American accent, and with a moderated volume.

*Tonality: they talk fluently as they say everything in a row and with contractions and only pause when finishing a sentence.

*Tonicity: the focus in their speech is made mainly on exclamations, questions, names and onomatopoeias, while the rest is relatively neutral. Some words or phrases that are said with more focus are for instance "Jason", "Ahhh", "Ha ha!", and "Bam bam bam!"

*Tone: the tone they use denotes closeness as we can spot certain degree of friendship and informal exchange of words. They also construct a relaxed and funny atmosphere as they laugh and joke with each other.

Moreover, they use a high pitch, specially with exclamations and onomatopoeias.

—Welcome to retirement, buddy!

—We don't wear shirts, Jason.

—Well?...Ha ha! Yes!
