First Grade
Mom! Wait outside!
Wait right there
on the sidewalk
outside our classroom!

Wait so I can see you.
Don't go home!
I'll be out there at 3 o'clock.

Wait outside mom.
Don't leave.

Bad Horsey
A rocking horse on springs.
A group of grownups around me, laughing as I hold
the horse’s plastic head.
I rock so hard
I fly off the horse
and crash on the floor.
Adults gasp.

Pain.
Someone says,
Bad horsey.

Dead Spider

The dead spider

squashed

My mother said,

“It’s bad luck

Flappy has no thumbs, you know
he only has smooth paws
he can't show thumbs up or down
to share the way he feels
He can't hold a pencil,
or a crayon,
he can't draw,
he can't write pretty poetry
or even hold a spoon
so he has to stick his snout
directly in the soup

Flappy's so bummed
because he's unthumbed

The Old Coin

in the closet, in a box

dark and lost for years

when I took it out at last

it jumped into my heart

and unlocked memories

like a key opening a chest

I squeezed the old coin in my hand

and grandpa was alive again
