Okunoshima is an island in Japan that was used, during the years of WW2, as a lab to manufacture biological weapons by Imperial Japan. The island was eventually abandoned as the Americans made their island-hopping campaign, driving the Japanese back into their mainland... The bunny rabbits used for testing (biologically fine, mind you), did what rabbits do when not supervised and quickly populated the island. Today, no body lives there but is a great tourist atraction if you like being overrun by fluffy bunnies.

Source: Murdok, S. (2014). When the army had to move, they brought Wojtek with them by officially enlisting him in the Polish forces as a private. During the Battle of Monte Cassino (1941), Wojtek helped the army by carrying crates of ammo to the artillery men. When the war ended in 1945, Wojtek was moved to the Edinburh Zoo in Scotland, and died in 1963 (Simple History, 2017).

Source
Simple History.
