Women's rights are an incredibly important cause to Kaur. Her whole book and life centers around how she is treated as a woman of color and how she has learned to deal with the insane amount of negativity that is cast by society on the female body. She openly talks about periods, leg hair, sex, all the things businesses profit off of when it comes to women's insecurities. Her causes range from racial injustice to domestic abuse to sexual harassment to abortion to body image. She has gone on tours as a motivational speaker to try and bring about changes on the stigma of women's issues, never failing to impact hearts with her personal story and lighten spirits with her seemingly infinite hope for the future. Milk and Honey is her first poetry book, one that artfully demonstrates tragedy and success, and provides a platform for her message to be read by people all over the world, of all races and ages and genders. To give people so different from one another a chance to bond over and relate to something they both have in common is a feat to be proud of, and really, what better way of true healing is there?

Social Media and Reaching Today's Audiences

Surprisingly enough, Rupi Kaur began her skyrocket to success on Instagram. After fighting the company for taking down a picture she posted containing menstrual blood, her conflict (and eventual win) with the social media giant went viral and launched Kaur into a world where her opinion mattered- something she hadn't had as a kid.

Ultimately, Rupi Kaur is a millennial. Some might argue that as a disadvantage in her career. After all, she might not be taken seriously in her art and dismissed as just another kid trying to change the world. However, the millennial generation is the first to have a hold on social media, the first to have a short and concise way to get their ideas across oceans and globally have an impact with just 140 characters. Rupi Kaur, incredibly, has achieved just that. Through social media, she's able to share brief poems and snippets of her life to her 86.5K Twitter followers, 230,301 Facebook followers, 856k Instagram followers, and countless more people that see her posts and pass them on. Unknowingly, or perhaps purposely, this subtle self-promotion made it so her book, when released, stayed on the New York Times' Bestseller List for nine weeks. She has consistently used social media to her advantage, and in doing so has been constantly revolutionizing the way poetry is presented to the masses and in general, the stigma the genre of poetry contains.

The Theme of Milk and Honey

It's not hard to tell the theme from the samples of poems I've put in this padlet. There is an overwhelming theme of womanhood, both the advantages and disadvantages of it, and how to deal with the extremes of each. The best part about this particular book is it's not just Kaur's journey that you're experiencing. It's your own journey as well, and the parallels that come of that are something you see in very few poetry books. Kaur has found a way for the generations of today to connect to a style of writing considered boring, long-winded, out of date. This new, modern form of poetry enhances the simple theme of feminism, healing, and loving yourself, three topics that go hand in hand in hand for Kaur.

Why This Matters

Kaur's ability to chronicle her self discovery and character change in a book and her courage to share it and send it out into the world are the types of things that inspire change on a continuosly larger scale. Her bravery in talking openly about her childhood sexual harassment, not just in her book but her in her speeches as well, paved the way for hundreds of sexual harassment and abuse victims to come forward and share their experiences. As Kaur says, "There was no market for poetry about trauma, abuse, loss, love and healing." (Kaur) By inventing that market and that need, women like her were able to read the poetry and slowly come to terms with whatever had happened to them. But as Kaur explains, this isn't just a book for people like her. "Huffington Post called Milk and Honey a book all women should read, but why just women? Why not all men? They could benefit just as much from understanding what we go through and how we live." (Kaur) Her change matters to the world around us because of her ability to make everyone, no matter what, relate to her story, and through that, be able to understand and appreciate themselves more. Kaur's willngness to force herself into spaces she's been told she doesn't belong in leads to the breaking down of barriers for women, women of color, muslim women, and several other minority groups that wouldn't otherwise be welcomed in the publishing scene. Since the release of Milk and Honey, there have been 23 other poetry books similar to it on the New York Times Bestseller List. The change has just begun, but it's there, and it's undeniable.

Periods. Rape. Body hair. Sex. If those words make you uncomfortable, you should read this book. If they don't make you uncomfortable, you should also read this book. As illustrated in the sections above, this poetry book is divided into four parts that each outline a chapter of the author's life- from her childhood, to her first serious relationship, to the breakup, to her rediscovery of herself. Personally, my favorite section is the last section, titled "The Healing." I'm a sucker for the ending of a good character arc, and this is even better because it's in real life. With this particular book and its particular main idea, there's so many different possible ways to interpret it. Ultimately, it's up to you to take what you need from the book and leave what you can. I loved this book. It reopened me up to poetry, a genre I've become estranged from within the last few years, and really made me think. I think that's one of the most important things a book can do for you. Make you think. I would recommend Milk and Honey to everyone. And I literally mean everyone. I don't think there is one minority group, or sub culture, or ethnicity or gender or sexuality that can't benefit from reading this. It is a book for the people, no matter what the people may consist of, and, more importantly, it's a book for the soul.
