AREA: RETHYMNO

ISSUE: GENERAL WASTE MANAGEMENT

In Rethymno there are two problems for waste management. The first one is that municipality has not a lot of trucks for the transport of the waste and the second one is that the waste management area is a lot of far from the town of Rethymno. So this is not good for our environment .

CAUSES:

Τhe city of Rethymnon has a fairly large population as well as small industries and farms, as a result of which you create a large volume of waste, both domestic and industrial. There are lots of causes of general waste some of them are:

1) Household waste

2) Industrial waste

3) Food waste

CONSEQUENCES:

Inappropriate waste disposal has a lot of consequences. Some of them are the following:

1) Environmental impact

2) Economic impact

3) Mismanagement of waste

4) Gases from industrial processes

5) Global warming

Environmental impact

If waste is not disposed of appropriately, it can attract insects and rodents, which - in turn - can harbour parasites, worms, yellow fever, the plague and other serious conditions for humans. Also, there is a big risk of cancer if humans are exposed to hazardous waste that is burnt without sufficient protection.

Economic impact

There are large economic costs related to the appropriate disposal of waste. The long-term consequences may even be more dramatic than short-term issues.

Mismanagement of waste.

In order to get rid of waste in a proper way, there have to be effective waste disposal processes in place. If there is a lack of proper processes, mismanagement of waste may result. This could mean that waste is not disposed of in landfills or burnt but rather it is just disposed of illegally in forests or lakes.

This mismanagement can lead to serious pollution of the environment. Therefore, it can adversely affect many animals and plants.

Global warming

Through our consumption behavior and the resulting great amounts of waste, the global warming process is enhanced in a dramatic way. On the one hand, the production of goods leads to the emission of greenhouse gases. On the other hand, the disposal of waste leads to the emission of greenhouse gases through combustion processes. Thus, through our excessive consumption levels, we indirectly contribute to an increased speed of global warming and its resulting consequences.

POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS:

We have plenty of solutions to this problem.

First of all, we can make a variety of trash bins for different materials and in this way, we can recycle waste so as to minimize the amount of waste buried in the landfill of the prefecture.

Another solution is that we can use recycled materials for our art exercises. That’s because using recycled materials we can protect the environment.

The last thing we can do to protect our prefecture from pollution is that we can use second-hand materials and avoid buying new items every year because that is very harmful to the environment.

One video and some photos about this topic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0beNWKItik

For example, such people are often in need of ramps and extended parking spots, but those are rarely found. This apathy could cost their entire education and the loss of brilliant minds. However, there are ways to solve this problem. We could organize a charity to raise awareness and raise money from donations to use for equipping the whole city with disabilities-related equipment.

AREA: RETHYMNO PREFECTURE

ISSUE: POLLUTION

I am very concerned about the pervasive issue of pollution that shadows our picturesque landscapes. As a resident of this enchanting country, I am keenly aware of the intricate web of causes, consequences, and potential solutions that characterize this environmental challenge.

The causes of pollution in Greece are deeply rooted in industrial activities, vehicular emissions, and inadequate waste management. Rapid urbanization and a burgeoning population have intensified these factors, leading to a notable decline in air and water quality.

The consequences of this pollution are not merely environmental; they reverberate through our communities, affecting health, biodiversity, and the sustainability of our beloved surroundings.

Living in Greece, I witness firsthand the impact of pollution on air quality, especially in urban centers like Athens. Respiratory issues and health concerns have become an unfortunate reality for many citizens. Moreover, the degradation of water quality in our coastal areas poses a threat to marine ecosystems, jeopardizing the very essence of our vibrant tourism industry.

Yet, amidst these challenges, there is room for optimism and proactive measures. Addressing pollution in Greece necessitates a multifaceted approach. Stringent environmental regulations, coupled with robust enforcement, are imperative. Moreover, fostering public awareness and education on sustainable practices is pivotal in cultivating a collective responsibility towards our environment. Sustainable urban planning, investment in renewable energy sources, and advancements in waste management technologies are promising avenues for mitigating pollution. I personally believe that through concerted efforts at both individual and systemic levels, Greece can pave the way towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future. Let us stand united in safeguarding the beauty that defines our homeland.

AREA: SCHOOL

ISSUE: WATER MANAGEMENT

ISSUE:

Water management emerges as a pressing issue in our generation, affecting numerous cities and countries with consequences like flooding and water cuts. These challenges contribute to substantial water losses, posing a significant problem in a world where water is vital for survival. In our school, the issue compounds due to a large student population. When water is unavailable every other day, it creates various problems, impacting student cleanliness and hygiene. Addressing these issues necessitates comprehensive solutions at both global and local levels, emphasizing the importance of sustainable water practices and infrastructure development.

CAUSES:

I believe that inadequate water management stems largely from people's education. I've observed open or broken taps in our school's toilets multiple times. This presents two significant issues: firstly, leaving taps open unnecessarily wastes water; secondly, if one student neglects to close them, others may follow suit, questioning why they should take responsibility. Addressing this requires not only fixing immediate issues but also fostering a broader awareness and sense of responsibility among individuals to ensure sustainable water practices in schools and beyond.

CONSEQUENCES:

1. Health Risks: Contaminated water sources or inadequate sanitation can pose significant health risks. Waterborne diseases like diarrhea, cholera, and other infections may spread, affecting students, staff, and the community.

2. Absenteeism: Water-related illnesses can lead to increased absenteeism among students and staff. This affects the overall learning environment and productivity.

3. Impact on Hygiene: Insufficient water supply may compromise proper hygiene practices, such as handwashing. This can contribute to the spread of infections and diseases.

4. Learning Environment: Lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities can create an uncomfortable learning environment, hindering concentration and academic performance.

5. Operational Disruptions: Water shortages or inadequate infrastructure can lead to disruptions in daily school operations, affecting activities like cooking, cleaning, and maintenance.

6. Environmental Impact: Poor water management practices can harm the local environment, affecting ecosystems and biodiversity.

POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS:

Efficient water management within schools plays a pivotal role in promoting student health and academic achievements. Inadequate infrastructure and subpar hygiene standards can contribute to waterborne illnesses, negatively impacting overall student well-being. To tackle this issue effectively, educational institutions should allocate resources to enhance water infrastructure, implement educational programs on hygiene, and establish routine maintenance protocols. Prioritizing water conservation efforts, community engagement, and government backing becomes imperative. Integrating water-related subjects into the curriculum further raises awareness. Exploring alternative water sources and implementing emergency preparedness strategies contribute to increased resilience. Employing comprehensive solutions creates a secure and sustainable water environment, delivering positive outcomes for students and staff alike.

Although we can't say that we live in a concrete jungle, it is sad to be in a so small place with so many buildings.

This problem is due to some causes, but the most important is the fact that we live in a capitalistic society. Because capitalism pushes people to do things for their profit without caring about the environment. With this cast of mind, people will keep making more buildings, this will lead the green to death.

The main consequence is that without green there is nothing to reduce air pollution. We also have to think about the loss of green cuts and the association between greenery and peace of mind.

There are a lot of ways that we can save the green. Building mini-parks and playgrounds could be good for our town. Also by planting sidewalks, we can make a step to save the environment. Last but not least, making a garden at the school is something that not only helps the environment but also helps the students in many ways.

AREA: RETHYMNO PERFECTURE

ISSUE: DEFORESTATION

Deforestation refers to the cutting and clearing of forest cover or tree plantations for agricultural, industrial, or urban use.

CAUSES:

Urbanization: The rapid population growth in Rethymno in recent years (due to tourism) necessitates the creation of large tourist facilities, the expansion of infrastructure, and the opening of roads. All these human activities, combined with development projects, constitute one of the main causes of deforestation.

Agricultural activities: The increase in tourism creates a high demand for agricultural products, resulting in deforestation for the establishment of agricultural crops. Additionally, wood from trees is often used as firewood for heating homes during the winter.

Climate change: Climate change contributes to deforestation. Summer wildfires, droughts, and floods degrade and weaken forests, reducing their lifespan.

Grazing: Livestock farming in Rethymno is one of the primary occupations of the residents. Like agriculture, livestock farming requires vast expanses where animals can be raised to produce essential goods such as milk and meat. Deforestation is considered the best alternative solution to ensure the natural habitat for the animals.

CONSEQUENCES:

Increased global heating: Trees play a significant role in controlling global heating. The increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere enhances the greenhouse effect, leading to a continued rise in global temperatures and the occurrence of extreme weather events. Trees absorb greenhouse gases, restoring balance in the atmosphere. With ongoing deforestation, the percentage of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increases, ice melts, sea levels rise, and climate disruptions occur. In Rethymno and in recent years, droughts, lack of rainfall, and seasonal changes have been observed.

Destruction of the ecosystem (flora and fauna): Logging of trees results in the loss of ecosystems and biodiversity in the area. Many animals lose their habitats and are forced to migrate to new areas, while some are even at risk of extinction. Additionally, various species of native plants are lost.

Soil erosion: Trees are crucial for the water cycle and the preservation of soil nutrients. They absorb water and release moisture into the atmosphere. The soil remains moist as rainwater easily penetrates it. Without trees, there is soil erosion and flooding. A characteristic of the city of Rethymno is intense flooding with short-duration rainfall. Additionally, excessive forest grazing causes harm to the roots and trunks of the forests.

Climate changes: Loss of forests is detrimental to the climate, as forests play a significant role in providing oxygen, regulating the water cycle, and sequestering carbon dioxide.

Noise pollution: Forests reduce urban noise and contribute to the well-being of individuals' mental health. Deforestation leads to an increase in noise pollution from cars, motorcycles, and airplanes. Noise pollution results in heightened anxiety in humans (insomnia, difficulty concentrating) and disorientation in animals.

Loss of recreational areas and natural beauty: Forests serve as recreational areas (for excursions, hiking, nature exploration) and, at the same time, enhance the beauty of the city. The city of Rethymno, approximately 70 years ago, had large forested areas, mainly with pine and eucalyptus trees, which unfortunately are limited today due to urban development.

POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS:

Reforestation

Informing and educating residents about the benefits of forests

Reassessment of the value of the forest

Alternative heating methods

Legislation for forest protection

AREA: RETHYMNO PERFECTURE

ISSUE: SOIL EROSION AND DEGRADATION

CAUSES:

Soil erosion and degradation is a serious problem that is caused by the unsustainable substances farmers use.

CONSEQUENCES:

This is a huge issue as it leads to less and less arable land, water pollution, increasing of flood incidents but also desertification. Not only does this cause these impacts on our planet but also according to WWF there has been lost 50% of the world’s plant land in the last 150 years.

POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS:

I would like to offer some potential solutions to the problem, first and foremost to support sustainable agriculture we could start by buying organic products instead of chemical reproduction. By doing that we could make a lot of chemically reproduction products shut down as we will no longer be buying them, so they will not offer anything to the producer.

AREA: RETHYMNO PREFECTURE

ISSUE: BIODIVERSITY LOSS

The natural environment includes all living organisms, living and non-living things that are on Earth. Ecosystems, ecological units but also natural resources, for example, air and water are classified within the wider natural environment. His continuous and large intervention in nature reached the point of causing various important environmental problems. The increase in pollutants, the pollution of the seas, the toxic waste are only some of the problems, which the whole of humanity has to deal with daily. A cycle of problems is observed since a large part of the total population of the earth is willingly blind to the danger of these problems.

CAUSES:

Aquatic Pollution: In a country like Greece, the maritime space plays a leading role both in everyday life and in the economy and tourism. Unfortunately, however, the pollution of seawater is one of the primary problems in the environment due to the excessive drilling of water for crops.

Ecological Problems and Toxic Waste: It is said that Greece finishes at the bottom of the list in terms of waste management

Energy: Although Greece has turned its attention to renewable energy sources, currently bases most of its energy production on lignite.

4.	Air Pollution

CONSEQUENCES:

Every year very high rates of overfishing and reduction of fish diversity, which puts marine wealth at very high risk. Greece produces 20 million tons of municipal waste every year and recycles only 17% while composting only 2% of that percentage. Lignite is the worst fuel for the environment but remains the most economical. environmental pollution creates the greenhouse effect and widens the ozone hole. The forest is the planet’s oxygen factory and its destruction combined with the smoke that pollutes the atmosphere has negative consequences for public health.

POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS:

It all starts with education and training from an early age. We must realize that protecting the environment is a matter for all of us without any exception. The organization of reforestation, recycling, tree planting, and beach cleaning programs can contribute to saving the planet and developing a loving relationship with our natural environment. Alternative energy sources such as wind (see related article) and solar energy can meet our needs in an environmentally friendly way. The use of renewable energy sources over fossil fuels reduces the addition of carbon dioxide and other environmentally harmful gases to the atmosphere. Furthermore, the use of alternative energy sources reduces the thermal pollution of the atmosphere and water resources caused by the use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy. It is imperative to carry out biological waste treatment and strictly follow the protocols and directives of the European Union about the handling of municipal waste.
