One of the first books that I recall being read to was "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom." When I read it to myself, I would simply read it like it was any other book. However, when my teacher read it for the first time, she sang it! She created an experience unlike any other. By reading the book through song, accompanied by dancing felt letters, made the story and alphabet magically come to life!

One of my favorite "firsts" was "The Little Engine That Could'. I remember my mom and dad reading that book to me over and over as a child. I loved the book because I loved that no matter what happened and how many obstacles came her way, the Little Engine wanted so badly to deliver the food and toys to all of the little girls and boys on the other side of the mountain that she NEVER GAVE UP! I think that's a lesson everyone should learn! NEVER EVER GIVE UP!!

I loved listening to any book that my grandma read to me but my best memory was her helping me to read the Babysitter Club Books when they were still a little too hard for me in first grade. She encouraged me to try to read as much as I could and would take turns page by page. I loved the adventures of all the characters in the books and I went on as I got older to read the whole series! Recently, they have started remaking them into graphic novels that now my little girls enjoy!

I was enthralled with Shakespeare in high school because my literature teacher would read it aloud to us as a class. Shakespeare's works were not easy to understand, but somehow, through her expressive reading, the story came alive like a real movie in my head! Two of my most favorites were Beowulf and Romeo & Juliet!

My college professor had a voice of expression like no other! I had Dr. DeCarlo for Methods of Reading and I remember one day her reading Stone Soup to us....keep in mind we were in college and this was a children's book....I never took my eyes off of her and hung onto every word she read. Her expression while reading made the book so vivid in my head as if I were living the story rather than listening to it.

I remember reading Hatchet aloud as a child. By far one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had in regards to reading. The world it created within my head was simply magical. Stark, cold, and absolutely dangerous but all the while, alive. The story, the setting, and the storytelling became more than just words on pieces of paper, I felt like I had become a part of the story.

While pursuing my master's degree, my favorite class was easily children's literature. My professor would read aloud a chapter from a book each day as a teaser, then tell us if you want to know what happens, read the book! The first line of Because of Winn-Dixie captured me and transported me to that grocery store. I just had to read it. It is still one of my very favorites, and Kate DiCamillo has become a beloved author to not only me, but so many.

As a kid, I read and reread Bridge to Terabithia as a child. I loved reading with my mom: Little Women was one I remember reading with her and read with my daughter, too. Anne of Green Gables and A Wrinkle in Time are also strong memories for me. I also remember my elementary school teachers reading books with us. We would decorate our doors and hallways to recreate scenes from the book, so the entire school looked like book scenes!

My mother read to me every single night when I was a child. We would read Disney stories, Corduroy, Clifford, Paddington...just about everything that I could check out of my public library! The day that she brought me home from the hospital as a newborn, she read Goodnight Moon to me, and she made it the last book of the night for many, many years. When my son was born, she gifted me a copy of that book so I could share it with him.

Coming into high school I was assigned a book report on the first book in the series. It was the first time my homework became a passion for me and after completing the assignment I went on to read the the entire series. From this first real jump into fantasy stories grew a love of an entire genre of books that I now share with my daughter.
