I share students' previous ELPA scores with them individually, and have them set realistic goals for each domain. Then, with the class, I share test taking strategies, and have them select one or two strategies to focus on while taking the ELPA. (Such as writing their speaking responses, going back and re-listening to the listening passages then checking their answers, etc.). This has helped with student motivation. After we get the scores, we celebrate each goal that they achieved and growth in any domain.

In the upper grades, students are given a series of images and are supposed to write a story to go with the pictures. If this is not explained (thoroughly) in advance, most students will just describe the pictures. But, in order to earn proficient scores, they need to write a narrative. This has tricked even the more proficient students during the practice test.

I have our secretary print out sticky labels with the students name, SSID, birthday, grade, etc and put them on 3x5 cards. It makes it easier for logging in and out and keeping track of things. I test during my regular ELD time even though it's a half an hour. It's way easier than creating a new test schedule. I do the practice test twice with Kinders. Show and explain that everyone sometimes needs multiple tries to get it right when it comes to speaking and how to just rerecord your response.
