We discuss proper academic discourse and introduce vocabulary associated with tier 1, 2,  & 3 words which create the diction both denotatively and connotatively so students learn the proper communication expected in career and college readiness as well as the rigor of higher level thinking.

Discourse is built through practice and familiar language can be used and then modified. It is much like initial writes and then rewrites—we edit and revise and academic discourse skills work the same way.

I teach science, which is very vocabulary heavy. I think sometimes, science teachers can focus too much on vocab rather than larger concepts. It's a hard thing to balance.
