Things the Netherlands and Finland have in common

There are a lot of differences between the Netherlands and Finland. However, there are also some things we actually have in common.

1. Drinking coffee and eating herring

The Finns drink the most coffee per capita in the world. The Netherlands is not far behind and that has nothing to do with the coffee shops. By the way, most of the coffee drunk in Finland is brought from Holland.

Herring belongs strongly to Finnish traditional cuisine as well as to Dutch. Finns eat herring all year round and the Dutch eat it especially during summer. The Dutch habit is to stick an entire salty fish seasoned with at least onion into your mouth.

2. Parsimony

The Dutch are not really fussy about anything, except money. Sometimes I wonder if this quality helped the nation grow to be the trading specialists or if the trading experience made the nation so conscious about money. Anyway, I would not necessarily advice starting a conversation about money in Holland.

The Finns are precise about money too. I think it is a consequence of rationality being valued so strongly. A Finn thinks it is just dumb to pay even ten cents more from something that costs less on the other side of the city. And dumb is the last thing a Finn wants to be.

3. The weather is not a reason not to go out

In Finland, outside air is consumed on a daily basis through summers and winters. Even small children can dress accordingly and put more layers underneath their overalls on a colder day or wear waterproof pants on a rainy day. Everybody wears a hat and gloves. Going out is only a matter of gear and in Finland people are not usually cold as there is right kind of clothing available.

The Dutch, like the Finns, are not afraid of cold, wet or draught, but even if the weather is not a reason to not go outside, it is not a reason to invest in clothing either. The cold is used for hardening a person and even babies hurtle on their bike seats without hats or mittens in almost freezing temperatures.

As a Finn enjoys the warmth of his home wearing a t-shirt even if it is minus twenty (-4F) outside, in Holland the seventeen degree (62F) inside air of a home is used for growing stronger characters.
