When I first read this article, I thought Zachary Cruz was being outrageously treated. I can’t imagine how it must feel to be so closely linked to someone (his brother) who has committed a school shooting and be judged for it. None of us can... but that’s just it. They are brothers, they shared a livelihood, they likely went through many many MANY of the same experiences, whether at home or at school. I strongly uphold that guns are not the reason for our school shootings, but rather our culture as a society both locally and nationally. People who commit mass shootings are not mentally stable, obviously, and they are often ostracized and cut-off from society. In my opinion, if Nikolas Cruz had such a mental state where he felt it viable to harm others, then this was based on a series of negative experiences. Experiences that his brother likely shared. I think the fact that Zachary was going to the school to ‘take it all in’ upholds the assumption that he was very troubled and challenged on a mental level by his brother’s actions. Therefore, I agree that he be should be tracked, evaluated, and restricted, especially since it is considered temporary here.

How do you think the psychological evaluation of Zachary Cruz relates to, or does not relate to, the current call for stricter gun control laws? Do you think the judge had this in mind when he ruled as he did?
