At times, on caring for a child and their family, it came to my attention, usually by a parent, that I had not communicated respectfully. Fortunately this was rare, but each time this happened to me, I felt terrible and was surprised, unaware of how my words had been hurtful. When I was able to responsively remain calm and discuss further with the parent, I learned that inadvertant words or comments had been hurtful unintentionally. This knowledge allowed me to apologize and on occaision, when this conversation occured with students/residents/fellows present, to make it a teachable moment. Thanking the parent for teaching me as well as my team. This approach is usually not expected but greatly appreciated. On more than one occaision the parent told me of their surprise that I was willing to apologize and how much this was appreciated.
