Slaves were sold in the West Indies by auction. These auctions were advertised in posters or newspapers. Another way slaves were sold in the West Indies was in scrambles. This was when buyers ran at the slaves to claim groups or individuals they wanted. Slaves were washed, shaved and oiled to make them look younger and healthier.

Slaves were washed and shaved and separated into ‘lots’. These ‘lots’ were a mix of different ages, genders and abilities. They were presented to the public through an auction and the highest bidder would own the slave. Next, there was a ‘scramble’ where individual slaves could be picked out for purchase to work on plantations. The slaves which were not claimed were left to beg and starve at the ports and no further care was taken of them

Slaves were sold once they reached the West Indies by being rubbed with palm oil and shaved close to make them look young and healthy. Slaves were also sold once they reached the West Indies at auctions were they were sold in ‘lots’. Once slaves reached the West Indies sometimes there would be a ‘scramble’ where buyers would rush forward to claim the either individual slaves or ‘lots’ they desired. Slaves were sold in the West Indies through advertisements in newspapers, posters and pamphlets e.t.c.

Eilidh's table

Slaves were kept in a cage before auction to prevent them from escaping. Posters were put out days before to show the date of when the slaves were going to be auctioned also the gender and the amount of slaves. The bidders could come up to touch and prod the slaves to see the condition of them to make sure they weren't ill or injured. The slaves would go to the highest bidder. If the slaves weren't sold there was a scramble where they could be sold individually.
