Mandeep Kaur 9H

In todays lesson we had to make a role play about the zombie apocalypse. we use a lot of drama techniques such as: cross-cutting ,thought tracking and also still image. The areas of our piece which were really effective were the cross-cutting parts as we demonstrated it really well and we also used thought tracking for effect as well. On stage we chose to do the present future and then the past. We thought this would really set the mood for the audience and also wanting the audience to find out more about our piece. This was really effective because the audience would be intrigued to want to find out more and also getting them thinking of what has happened and why. overall I think our piece was intense and also effective in many different ways.

Miss Jim says: You have demonstrated that you understood why the use of crosscutting was used in your work to try to engage the audience and build tension. Can you describe how you used transitions in the work and how they made it clear you were moving forwards and backwards in time?

We used transitions in our work to go forwards and backwards in time for the crosscutting scene. We made it clear that we were crosscutting by saying 2 years earlier in our piece and then actually transitioning into the crosscutting scene.

Sohana Raja Our performance was based on the Zombie Apocalypse, it was mainly about the past, present and future transition. We first done the scene that showed the present, next we performed the scene that flashbacks to the past and lastly it was the scene shown in the future. this was a good idea because it gives the audience more of a clue of what we were trying to exhibition. in our group we were able to demonstrate transition easily and we also used a good amount of speech in it too. Our performance was clear enough for the reader to understand and know what we are trying to explain. In our role plays we used a few drama techniques such as crosscutting, Movement, and a few more.

It was effective as it was suspenseful and the audience would want to know what happened as Saffiya would shout this is all my fault it created climax as the audience was gripped and wanted to know how it was her fault. However if Saffiya said this but it was in chronological order it wouldn't be as effective as the audience already know what shes done. To improve we need to make more of a solid storyline and make sure that we use more drama techniques such as sound scape.

Miss Jim says: Some good use of drama vocab - including climax.

We used levels and also some soundscapes for example- when we all fell at the end there was a loud bang. I think it was good as it signalled us (when we were meant to fall) and also fitted with the scene. The levels are also effective as it can help the audience understand how the character is feeling for example- when two people were hugging their knees it shows that they are scared of the zombies around them. However, I think we should work on transitions because as the still image was not clear the audience thought it was two scenes and not three this also meant that they could not tell the present scene and that they thought it was a flashback. Another thing we can work on is staging as we were too far from the audience and we were also near the corner at the end this means that the audience could not hear the speech very well.

Salma

Miss Jim says: I am very pleased that you discuss your use of staging as it is important that you consider this drama skill. Our role play consisted of 3 scenes, my group showed this through flash back and flash forward (A.K.A cross cutting). The first scene has shown present, then past lastly future. I believe that this was effective it helped illustrating how the apocolypse had happened. We used levels and staging to show an understanding of who we are and what we are saying. The impact these gave was that we included climax and creating a suspense to show how every one was effected by the touch of the zombies. I think it would have been better if we had developed our transitions to make it very clear we are moving from one scene to another e.g if we are going to the past we could say 'the day it all began' and then start moving slowly into the next scene.

Miss Jim says: Very good use of drama vocabulary in your response with a solid understanding of why to use crosscutting. We ordered our play in this sequence: present, past and then future. This order has an impact on the audience by leaving them in suspense after the future scene. It makes them wonder what happened that lead to what was shown in the first scene that we performed. Our transition were a little bit confusing for the audience as they thought that we only had future and past scenes whereas we had future past and present scenes. This means that our group has to go back and either refine our transitions, or come up with a clearer way to show it so that we can then use it in our future pieces.

Miss Jim says: You make a good point about how the use of crosscutting would impact an audience.

In that lesson our role play was effective because of how we created that suspense as it wasn't in chronological order. We created that suspense as a team because the first thought's were where are these zombies even coming from. However in the next scene it brings that climax. So that creates suspense to the audience. To improve i agree with what my team mate have written an we could add more soundscape to give that extra effect.

Miss Jim says: Good use of drama vocabulary in your response. If you were to use a soundscape can you be more specific about what sounds you would use and why?

In our piece of drama I think our use of space and staging was effective as we knew where we had to be at what time. This made our transitions smoother and easier for the audience to understand what scene we were on. We also didn't come too close to the audience nor did we move too far away.

Miss Jim says: It is good that you are starting to think about the use of staging in a performance. Please could you give a specific example of how you used staging in an effective way in your work.

In our performance I think our use of space and staging was very effective as we were able to not block the audience and were not too far off centre stage during the piece. We were also able to smoothly transition smoothly into our next scene so that it made it easier for the audience to understand where each scene started and ended. We also used crosscutting starting from present time to show the action and then we moved to the past to show the audience exactly how it happened. This would keep them hooked and wanting to know why someone was dying in hospital. So by keeping the dialogue short and the arguments consider we were able to improve our roleplay using the feedback and advice we had received.

Miss Jim says: You are right when you talk about how crosscutting might keep an audience interested and hooked. Can you give a specific piece of feedback you were given in order to develop the piece further?

My performance was aboyt a zombie appocolypse. we used still images to mark the moment and crosscutting to make the story more interesting. we started our scene in the present then used a traansition to cut ahead two years later showing the after math os everything,.

Miss Jim says: Why do you think your use of crosscutting made your story more interesting? can you give a specific example?
