It's scientific name is Thaumactopus mimicus. The average mimic octopus reaches about 60 cm in length and is brown and white striped. Like other species of octopus, the mimic octopus has eight long legs. The mimic octopus resides in muddy river bottoms and estuaries in the tropics- typically unexplored areas. Their diet consists of small crustaceans and fish.

Though all octopus species have camouflaging capabilities, the amazing impersonating abilities of the mimic octopus are incomparable. In order to avoid predators, the mimic octopus has the ability to: change colors, impersonate several animals and switch between them rapidly, contort its body to take on the appearance of other animals, and exhibit the behavior of other animals. The mimic octopus distinguishes which organism to impersonate by determining the threat present. The mimic octopus will frequently impersonate the predator of its own predator.
