SEL602 MODULE 7 FA21 Final Project Gallery by Prof. Dauph

The final project will be an electronic or paper survey for colleagues inquiring about a shared colleague initiative such as a Book Club, Action Collaborative, or Self-Care affinity group. You will also provide a reflection on what and how you might use this for climate support and/or shifts, which can be used as part of your final capstone project in the Fall. Please post your survey here via a word doc, PDF, or link (e.g. Google, Survey Monkey), and provide a brief reflection paragraph that explains how you anticipate using this survey, and its associated group actions, as part of larger goals in your work setting such as finding an affinity group for yourself, supporting teacher/staff wellness, creating collaborative professional development, or informing a larger school-wide SEL initiative, to name a few examples. This is a short blurb and not as long or as formal reflection paper you are also being asked to submit. The survey and reflective blurb should be posted no later than 12/13. (The formal reflection paper is also due no later than 12/13) via the Blackboard Assignments portal for Module 7.) I encourage the class to check in on the board to see what others are doing as a way to enrich your own experiences and take-aways for the course. As always, you are encouraged to comment on one another's work.

The survey will provide a group of teachers the ability to reflect on daily lessons, unit plans even curriculum to see the incorporation of culturally relevant social emotional learning competencies. The SEL questions are pulled from CASEL - 5 SEL Competencies. The HRL- Cultural Relevancy questions are coming from, historically relevant literacy layers, Identify, Skills, Intelligence, Criticality from Dr. Muhammed, “Cultivating Genius” to ensure the consideration of both students’ social emotional needs and cultural identities.

We all recognize that teacher burnout is a real thing, therefore, in my opinion it is essential to embed wellness for all staff more frequently throughout the school year. This will not only create a climate of community but also teach tools to manage stress both professionally and personally. Just like the students have after school clubs, this could be a club that is run for staff where either the focus is on physical wellness (i.e. walks, yoga, weight room), emotional health (mindfulness, coloring, focused discussions), or more of a social outing. This initial needs survey would be conducted to all high school staff (approx. 150 people) to gauge interest and/or topics.
Jenna DeRosa

My goal is to provide support with a self care or mental health team. This will focus on staff to start and then hopefully grow to students as well. I think this survey will be a great starting point for learning who is passionate about this and a start to building stronger relationships. I think if this team comes together it would be a great opportunity for collaboration towards a goal of better self care and wellness overall. We need to know taking care of ourselves first is priority so we can be at our best for our students.

Since the beginning of the school year I have noticed that morale among teachers and staff is at an all time low. What we thought this school year would look like and what it has actually turned out to be are the complete opposite. Faculty and staff are being squeezed by educational institutions like never before. The responsibilities pile up and "me" time has become almost impossible to find. We are frustrated, emotionally/mentally exhausted and physically drained.
In an attempt to recognize and acknowledge what we are feeling I plan to role out a bi-monthly faculty circle opportunity. This opportunity will provide a secure space to talk, reflect on and build our capacity to tackle the school year through shared moments of vulnerability.
The brief survey attached is to gauge interest in this unique support opportunity. Remember, "What is said in the circle, stays in the circle"!

This affinity club for school staff/teachers' wellbeing aims to achieve self-awareness and self-management and regulate emotions, thoughts, and behaviors across situations. This survey will focus on evaluating the emotional well-being of educational leaders in line with the empirical evidence that asserts that schools are stressful places. Individual responses will focus on Physical wellbeing, mental/emotional/spiritual wellbeing, Professional life/work/career, and Social life/family/relationships. The intended group is teaching staff serving in densely populated sub-urban schools of low-income communities. This survey would use the Google form format, limited to twenty questions, and an estimated group size of 100 responders. The potential plan for delivery of the survey is through Email.

The goal of this project is overall social/emotional well-being. I envision this survey marrying two committees we have here at my agency, Diversity & Wellness. As the co-chair for our Diversity Committee, we are currently working on a "virtual comment box" where staff can leave feedback or share concerns either anonymously or or named. Part of this survey discusses that opportunity. The survey would also ask staff how they would feel supported, and provide options for check-ins, etc. It also provides tools and activities such as quarterly newsletters, quizzes, and tips.
I feel that part of wellness is being comfortable, and cared for in your work environment. With this survey, I hope that staff feel that they can be open and honest to feel supported and valued.

This survey aims to enhance positive Recognition and Appreciation amongst staff and faculty, which eventually will trickle into the classrooms and community. Recognition is positive feedback based on specific results and performance. We reinforce expectations and create long-term habits by acknowledging short-term wins and behaviors. Recognition from all levels and across the school community – leadership, peers, parents, and students – contributes to staff and faculty members' sense of belonging and increases motivation, leading to greater productivity, engagement, and retention. Appreciation focuses on the person. It is about acknowledging a person's inherent value. The focus is not their accomplishments; it is their value as colleagues and people. Appreciation helps us to feel valued, respected, and supported.
Also, since every school is different, and when it comes to supporting staff and faculty through this Recognition and Appreciation Plan, it will vary according to each school community's unique environment.
-Kathryn
