         <title>A Climate Friendly Diet</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Background Info:<br>Cows are a food source enjoyed by many, but raising these animals creates negative environmental effects. A single cow releases around 250-500 litres of methane a day, and there are nearly 1 billion cows in the global meat and dairy industries (Baker, 2021). However, things are looking positive for cow methane emissions, as changing a cow's diet can reduce the impact (Baker, 2021).<br><br>SDG Connection:<br>A connection can be made between a cow's diet and SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.&nbsp; The results of raising cattle releases an immense amount of methane emissions (Baker, 2021). To reduce the effects of methane, countries are modifying a cow's diet to contain seaweed, and as a result, there is an 80% reduction in emissions (Baker, 2021). These actions are being used to combat the harsh impacts of the meat and dairy industries, and therefore connect to SDG 13.<br><br>Course Connection:<br>This modification in a cow's diet connects to big idea F1. F1&nbsp; addresses the impacts of human activity on air pollution and identifies ways to reduce its effect. The negative results of the meat and dairy industry contribute a huge amount to air pollution, but adding seaweed to a cow's diet reduces that effect (Baker, 2021). As a result of countries recognizing the impact of cows on air pollution and working to improve it with seaweed diets, this article connects to the course.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Reducing Concrete Climate Change</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Background info: <br>Concrete is a readily available material that is the second most widely used substance on Earth (Watts, 2020). Unfortunately, concrete is a huge contributor to air pollution and climate change, with the cement industry emitting 2.8 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the air (Watts, 2020). On the bright side, <em>CarbonCure</em> technology has been developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Tridel, 2022).<br><br>SDG Connection:<br>There is a clear connection between <em>CarbonCure </em>and SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. When concrete and cement are produced, carbon dioxide is emitted into the air (Watts, 2020). When excessive amounts of this gas enter the atmosphere, they get trapped, contributing to climate change (Osmanski, 2020). However, <em>CarbonCure</em> technology traps carbon dioxide in concrete and prevents it from entering the atmosphere(Tridel, 2022). By doing this, the company is combating the cement industry's contribution to climate change, making the connection to SDG 13 clear.<br><br>Course Connections:<br>This <em>CarbonCure</em> technology connects to big idea F1. F1 is related to the effects of technology on air pollution and reducing carbon footprint. As previously mentioned, cement and concrete produce large carbon dioxide emissions, negatively effect the climate (Watts, 2020). The<em> CarbonCure</em> technology infuses carbon dioxide into the concrete and reduces the companies carbon footprint (Tridel, 2022). Because the company recognizes the impact of cement and works to reduce the impact of air pollution with the technology it connects to the course.<br><br>Canadian Connection:<br><em>CarbonCure </em>Technologies is a Canadian-owned company located in Halifax (Tridel, 2022).</div>]]></description>

         <title>Sustainable Food</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Background info:</div><div>According to research from the National Zero Waste Council, Canadian households waste approximately 2.2 million tonnes of food each year (City of Toronto, 2022). Wasted food heavily contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases (Let's Talk Science, 2019). Luckily, a series on TikTok called <em>Scrappy Cooking </em>is teaching viewers how to reduce food waste.</div><div><br></div><div>SDG Connection:</div><div>It is clear that this TikTok series has a connection to SDG 12: Ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns. When food is produced, many steps go into getting the items into people's homes such as harvesting, packaging, and transportation (Let's Talk Science, 2019). As a result of these many processes, greenhouse gases are emitted into the atmosphere (Let's Talk Science, 2019) When food gets wasted all of the emissions that went into the product are also wasted (Let's Talk Science, 2019). On top of that, even more, greenhouse gases get emitted as a result of rotting food. By teaching viewers not to waste their food scraps, <em>Scrappy Cooking </em>is making sure nothing goes to waste, benefiting the planet; therefore, this series is promoting sustainable consumption habits.</div><div><br></div><div>Course connections:</div><div>The TikTok series <em>Scrappy Cooking</em> has connections to big ideas C1 and F1. C1 is all about identifying different chemical reactions and their impact on the environment. When food rots it creates a decomposition reaction, which results in emissions of gases such as methane (Let's Talk Science, 2019). The methane released into the atmosphere contributes heavily to global warming (Garthwaite, 2021). The purpose of the series is to lessen the impact of food waste on the environment. F1 addresses human activities, their impact on air pollution, and how to reduce its effect. As previously mentioned, the result of human food scraps negatively contributes to air pollution, but <em>Scrappy Cooking </em>gives viewers an environmentally friendly alternative to throwing out their food waste. As a result of identifying the chemical reaction of food waste and addressing air pollution the TikTok series connects to the course.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Sustainable Clothing </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Background info:<br>Many clothing companies use rayon fabric and synthetic dyes. To produce this fabric, wood pulp is treated with chemicals, which get filtered and spun into a fine thread and dyed (d&amp;b, 2021). As a result of this process, toxic chemicals are released into the air and water (MasterClass, 2021). However, <em>Tamga Designs</em> is a brand that uses environmentally friendly fabrics and low-impact dyes (Tamga Designs, 2022).<br><br>SDG Connection:<br>It is evident that this brand has connections to SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. <em>Tamga Designs</em> is doing everything in their willpower to make their products environmentally, including but not limited to planting trees to absorb carbon emitted from their clothing and recycling water and solvents used to make products (Tamga Designs, 2022). By implementing these initiatives, the brand is working to make its products better for the environment and thus contribute to sustainable production.<br><br>Course connections:<br>This brand has connections to big ideas B1, E1 and F1. These three big ideas all share the same key concept of identifying the effects of chemistry on the environment, and how to reduce the impact. B1 relates as it focuses on analyzing the chemical properties and effects of common items and their environmental impact; the founders of the brand analyzed the negative results of traditional rayon and dyes on the environment, and made a switch to alternatives (Tamga Designs, 2022). E1 relates in this case because of the connection to water pollution; since producing rayon is a contributor to water pollution, the brand now uses a closed-loop process that recycles water and solvents, making sure runoff does not pollute nearby water sources (Tamga Designs, 2022). F1 relates as there is a connection to reducing air pollution. Producing Clothing creates carbon dioxide emissions, so <em>Tamga Designs</em> went carbon-neutral, by planting trees to absorb any carbon emitted by a <em>Tamga Designs </em>garment (Tamga Designs, 2022). Since the brand analyzed the chemical properties of rayon and it's effect on the environment and took action to limit water and air pollution, it has a connection to this course<br><br>Canadian Connection:<br><em>Tamga Designs</em> is a Canadian-owned brand and is partnered with Toronto-based research facilities (Tamga Designs, 2020).&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Introduction</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Chemistry is occurring all around us. As countries are becoming more aware of the impact chemistry has on the environment and human health, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 in hopes that by 2030 they can make a difference. When looking at these SDGs from a grade 11 chemistry course lens, I can make multiple connections to my learning experience. However, goals 12 and 13&nbsp;both have clear relations to this course. SDG 12, responsible consumption and production, connects to this course as it recognizes the negative impacts that commonly used chemicals used for manufacturing have on the environment, and how to reduce potential water and air pollution that can result from production. SDG 13, take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, as it addresses the impact of humans on climate change and is aiming to reduce the damage. To further demonstrate how the SDGs connect to this course, I chose to showcase the following: <em>Tamga Designs</em> a brand that creates sustainable clothing, <em>Scrappy Cooking</em> a TikTok series that teaches viewers how to use leftover food scraps, a <em>CarbonCure</em> a concrete company reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and an article that shares how changing a cow's diet reduces methane emissions.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Overall by looking at specific items, it was evident that the sustainable development goals connect to this course. When completing this assignment, I gained a lot of insight. Through the research required, I&nbsp; learned about interesting Canadian initiatives that help the planet and other innovations around the world. For me to support the SDGs, I can do a couple of things. Firstly, to promote sustainable consumption and production, I can switch from buying fast fashion to supporting brands that use sustainable processes. This project made me realize that I do not know how my clothes are manufactured; however, now I can start shopping and supporting sustainable clothing brands. Moving on, to support SDG 13 and 12, I can start using my food waste. As someone who loves to cook, bake, and eat food, this assignment helped me realize the number of scraps that are often tossed; luckily, now I have learned how to use food scraps to combat climate and promote sustainable consumption habits. Finally, to support all the SDGs, I can start sharing about them on social media. Although it may be a small action on my part, educating others can inspire them to make changes in their lives as well. As a whole, I think the SDGs have the potential to make a massive impact. Along with addressing climate change, the other SDGs are promoting a better world for people to live in. From my perspective, every piece of change counts; therefore, I believe the SDGs have the potential to be big. Ultimately, chemistry is all around us and as we recognize its impact we can begin to change the world.</div>]]></description>
