This story is written in a 2nd person Point of View. This can be seen in the second line where it starts with "you". "You are sitting in the garden for the first time this year, sitting on a cushion on the grass by Mother " (Godden, 1). This 2nd person point of view immerses the reader in the story as if Ally were themselves

The main plot in the story is about Ally trying to go to the bathroom and overcoming struggles along the way. Ally is sitting in a garden with her mother when a Visitor comes and joins them. Ally, to show that even with her blindness she can be Independent, asks to "Go Upstairs" which means to go to the bathroom. The visitor doesn't want Ally to succeed, and even tells her to go Alone, and by herself. In her walk to the bathroom, Ally uses many different tools to navigate her way there. For example, Ally used the cinders to stay on her path because the smell of the cinders warned her off the edge of the path, so she didn't go off track. Ally uses many more tools such as the poplars or judging off what her mother says to get herself to the bathroom or "loo".

Use of Sensory Language

Ally uses senses such as sound, touch, and sound in the story. For example, Ally uses sound to determine whether or not Schiff, the tortoise is in the way. "Schiff is so small that you might easily step on him, but Schiff is large enough for you to fall over. Mother . . . but you must not call, you must go on. You think of falling, you can't help thinking of falling-down-into nothing until you get hit. Mother! Schiff! Mother! But you have not called and Mother is saying in what seems an ordinary voice to the visitor but is her special loud voice for you. "How strange! With all this sun, our tortoise has not come out on the path today." (2). By listening to what her mother says to the Visitor, Ally can safely walk on the path and not step on Schiff.

Characterization

The main characterization of Ally is that she is Independent. This can be seen several times in the story, for example, Ally constantly tries to hide her pain and struggle to find the bathroom to prove she is an Independent person and not someone who is Disabled. She constantly refused help and tried her best and succeeded in making it to the bathroom. " Little stickers come out along your back and neck; the back of your neck is cold, your fingers are sticky too, holding the heart signal. Suddenly you can't move away from the stairs. Mother. Mother, but you bite your lips. You must not call out. " (3). This quote shows how Ally is refusing to ask her mother for help just to prove to the visitor that she doesn't need help.

This image represents the theme because it shows that if you work hard enough you can overcome your problems. Ally did this because she stayed focus an never let her fear get to her. In the end, Ally made it to the bathroom safely and stunned the visitor.

Tone/Diction

The tone of the story is very centered around Ally's thoughts and memories. For every object she walks by or smells she always has a memory to connect them too. For example, when Ally walked passed the flower bed she thinks of the time when her mother explained how to know what type of flower each is. "That visitor there would be surprised if you picked the flowers, one by one, and took them to her and told her what they were. "I see no reason why you should not know your flowers," Mother has often told you. "Flowers have shapes and smells as well as colors." This is the hyacinth bed; hyacinths are easy, strong in scent and shaped like little pagodas - "Remember, I told you about pagodas"-and these are crocuses and these are aconites " (2). There is also several usages of Smells warning ally about her path. "On the other side of the trees is a smell of cinders where, last winter, ashes were thrown down on the snow. The smell warns you ... You won't fall, the cinder smell has warned you. " (2).

Literary Devices

There is a lot of usage of sensory detail in this story. Since Ally is blind she can vividly describe many things to a great extent. "With the smells come the house sounds, all so familiar: Doreen's footsteps in the kitchen, a whirring like insects from the refrigerator and the clocks, a curtain flapping in the wind and a tapping, a tiny rustle from the canary " (3). A second Example of sensory detail is Ally describing grass she is sitting on, "The feel of the grass is good; when pressing it down and lift your hand the blades spring up again at once as strong as ever; they will not be kept lying down. " (1). These example of Sensory detail show how strong Ally's sense of smell, sound, and touch are and also give the reader a clear picture of what she is describing.

There is one main internal and external conflict in the story. The main external conflict in the story is of Ally's struggle to go to the bathroom. Ally constantly runs into trouble going to the bathroom and has to remind herself of things with memories or relies on her mother for help. The main internal conflict in the story is that of Ally'sefforts to not show that the visitor is getting to her and that she can go to the bathroom on her own. She feels this need so bad that just the sound of the Visitors voice coming inside the house forced her to take the last step up the stairs to show she made it to the bathroom safely, "Through the window you hear voices, voices from the path. Page 3

Drops of water burst out on your neck and under your hair, and you leave the rail and step out on to the carpet and walk very boldly towards the verbena and warm toweling and the hot-metal-from-the-bath-taps smell. " (3-4).
