In 1485 Hernan Cortès was born in Medellin, Spain. He participated in a transatlantic military expedition (began in 1511) traveling to Cuba which Diego Velazquez led.

Later Velazquez sent a force to apprehend Cortès and relieve him from his command, but Cortès left the city to confront the force and defeated them.

Marina was the mistress of Cortès, and hey had a child. She could speak both Maya and Aztec, so she acted as an interpreter allowing for communication between Cortès and Indians he encountered. She was essential to the discussions between Montezuma II and Cortès.

Montezuma assumed that Cortès and his forces were messengers of the god Quetzalcoatl leading the Aztecs to welcome the Spaniards with a high level of respect. Cortès used the Aztecs honor for him as an opportunity to capture Montezuma II. Having Montezuma II hostage allowed Cortès to lead the empire through him. Tension and conflict rose between the Aztecs and Spaniards when Cortès was away fighting Narvaez. Upon the return of Cortès Tenochtitlan was in complete disarray. Cortes and his men left the city, and, in their departure, great violence occurred, and, in the chaos, Montezuma was killed.
