Hobbes was born in London in 1588. He went to college at Oxford University in England, where he studied classics. In 1651, Hobbes wrote his most famous book the Leviathan. In the book he stated that people were inherently evil, greedy, and selfish, therefore shouldn't govern. Hobbes believed that an absolute monarchy was best form of government. Hobbes ideas can be seen today primarily in England, where the royal family stills rules today. Although the royals are mainly just figure-heads, it still follows Hobbes same philosophy.

Locke was born in Bristol, England in 1632. He got his education at Oxford University in England. John's main influencer was John Owen, who first introduced him to the idea of religious freedom and the thought that people shouldn't be punished for having different religious views. In 1690, Locke wrote two treatises of government. In these he explained that government should be like a contract between the people and the ruler, the ruler has the power to govern the country as long as he doesn't abuse his role. John also believed in natural rights such as liberty, life, and protection of their property. This is seen today mainly in the United States where it is a main part of the constitution.

Charles was born in Bordeaux, France, in 1689. He studied science and history in college and later became a lawyer in the local government. In 1748 he published his most famous book, On the Spirit of Laws. It was a blueprint of ideas based on how government works best and he believed that all things were made up of rules or laws that never change. Charles stated that there are 3 types of government: a monarchy (royal rule), a republic (the ruler is elected), and a despotism (ruled by a dictator). He said that the best government is one in which power was balanced among three groups of officials, this idea was named “separation of powers.” His ideas are seen today democratic form of government and became the core for the United States Constitution.
