My name is Mandi Allen. I teach kindergarten at Roanoke.
This is my 8th year in education and my 11th year in NISD! Assessments for
learning- students are able to use the assessments to help them set a goal,
learning from feedback, and create their own assessments. Students and teachers
become partners in the assessment for learning process!

On another note, I had a teacher
in high school that allowed us to write everything we learned about that chapter for extra points even if it was not on the test. Then we could prove what we had learned even
if there wasn't I test question about it. This really help with my test anxiety and I could show her everything I had learned.

Nicole - I love that idea! Audra

I am so excited to be working in NISD and I have three kids that go to school with me at Ronaoke. My favority place to travel is called Lake Almanor, Ca. I grew up in CA and we still own a home their in the mountains and we travel there every summer to enjoy the mountains, lake and pleasent weather. I think the assessment either formative or summative is a small piece of the learning puzzle of our students. Yes we need to know what are students are learning and who is learning and who needs more help, but assessment doesn't define the student. I like in the article where it states that students must know what to do with assessment results. we must give students tools to use the assessment to their advantage and not let the student make the student feel negative about their self.

Hi! My name is Kristina Clark. I am a 2nd grade teacher at Clara Love Elementary. I have been a 2nd grader teacher for four years, but I have been in education all my life. I come from a family of educators, and spend most of my free time, and summers at school. My favorite place to vacation is anywhere warm with water.

Point to Ponder: Help students turn failure into success. I hate that students are feeling as if assessments are just there to measure their failures. I want to see them use the "failure" of a pre-test/pre- assessment as a way to grow, and questions what they need to become successful. The responsibility is on the student. What can I do as a learner to be successful?

I really like the idea presented in one article where students go back and analyze a math test to look at their incorrect problems to determine if their wrong answers were due to lack of understanding or careless mistakes. They take ownership of their learning and their mistakes and work to make themselves better.

I love laying by the ocean and watching the clouds flit across the sky.
Point to Ponder:
I think it is important that when giving back assessments, you don't just have your students see their grade, put it away, and then never touch it again. If a student is taught how to recognize their mistakes and then have the power to do something about, it can change something negative into something positive. I love using the tracking sheets in math for pre-test and post-test. This allows students to see what they didn't know at the beginning and how much they have learned at the end. Even if they didn't do so well on the assessment, it typically shows a drastic improvement. This tells them that if they work a little harder, they can make the leap to do even better. I do ponder how to make these changes in Science, though!
