Diversity brings variety to my classroom.

I currently teach Marketing to first-year undergraduate students. I have a fine mix of students with different unique characteristics, personality traits, ideologies, learning orientations, family background and ethnicity. Some of my students are fresh out of college, while others are a little more mature, having obtained a previous undergraduate degree.

It is always interesting to hear different perspectives on a topic during group discussions.

I use inclusive teaching strategies to ensure that all students feel supported such that they freely learn and explore new ideas, feel safe to express their views in a civil manner, and are respected as individuals and members of groups

My view on diversity

My Views on Diversity in Higher Education

In higher Education we would often encounter students with diverse traits. In my opinion, diversity brings variety to teaching and learning in Higher Education. It is quite easy for us to focus on the obvious diversity like ethnic differences, while ignoring hidden diversity such as personality traits, learning styles, previous experience etc. We often have an unconscious bias which leads to stereotypical labelling. It is thus important for us to treat each student as a unique individual and present a fair playing field for all. Recognising and embracing students’ differences is important.

How you might go about introducing inclusive learning and teaching in your practice

It is important to acknowledge the range of students differences, and allow the differences to transform how you teach, such that all students are treated fairly. Inclusive teaching and learning ensures that all students feel supported such that they freely learn and explore new ideas, feel safe to express their views in a civil manner, and respected as individuals and members of groups. Intentionally incorporating inclusive teaching strategies helps students view themselves as people who belong to the community of learners in a classroom.

To introduce inclusive learning and teaching in my practice, I leverage on the power of conversations and GET THEM TALKING. By facilitating dialogues where students can freely share, helps improve their learning experience. This is an opportunity for students to consider and explore perspectives beyond what they are already exposed to. As a result they begin to think critically and have a fresh and broader perspective of the world. The sharing of different ideas sparks creativity amongst students.

Your reflections on the question: Is inclusive learning and teaching simply good teaching?

Inclusive learning and teaching is a good teaching practice as it nurtures students’0 belonging and engagement. This reinforces the need to create a safe environment. I have found that if the learning environment doesn’t feel safe for students especially minority, they tend to become self-censored. In such case you find the students very quiet in class and unwilling to participate in class activities and discussions. To nurture student belonging and engagement, you need to embrace inclusive teaching strategies to ensure that all students feel supported.
