I think special education is a more thoughtful purposeful education that takes a purposeful approach of their students needs into when planning for their classroom experience. It seems to be more individualized and not as "cookie cutter" as some Gen Ed. can be.

My initial thought is there is still so much more work that needs to be done for students who are in special education classes to feel more included but yet still receive the same amount of support. It is definitely a team effort from everyone, classroom teacher(s), student, family, specialists, Special Education teachers, etc.

When I first got into special education I felt completely overwhelmed and scared. I feel like this is primarily because of what I didn't understand. While my current experience is limited I have grown a love for it and the students whose minds work differently than the "norm". I find myself fascinated everyday and never bored.

When I think of Special Education, I think of an environment in which the purpose is to meet the individual needs of students that have various obstacles they are facing. I think of how much work goes into making lesson plans and IEPs so that each student is as set up for success as they can be. I also think of how taxing it can be on the Special Education teacher and how much work truly goes into everything they do.

Special Education is helping learners with different challenges have access to educational material and work toward becoming a productive member of society. We also help them experience the world around them by using manipulatives and other assistive technology or using different teaching styles to encourage educational growth.

First initial thoughts about SPED- Izzy

I think of special ED as a classroom for the most extreme cases of disabilities/handicaps/disorders. However, since then my view has changed. It's a resource for children who simply learn differently and it seems like there is no concrete definition for what SPED is and who it's for. It seems to be structured around the students needs. I think that many people (especially parents) have negative perceptions about SPED. I have seen it myself at my school site.

When I was younger I was embarrassed to be pulled out of my class. It wasn't until I was older that I realized that I just needed some extra support to become the best learner I could be. When I think of special education I think of it as an extra support system for students that need it. It is helping students and sometimes teachers navigate the best tools to help students that need it.

Special education offers a learning design to students who demand more support that it is not offered or received in the typical classroom setting. Special education requires additional services and programs to help students with IEP get the right education
