Quote explained: To me this quotes means that for teachers to fully understand the students they teach they must have an understanding of their community and back ground. Teachers have to have knowledge about where the students live and the kind of support they have from the community. Teachers must go out into the community to know their students and their parents better. Going to community based events is perfect for teachers to do. Or going to their students after school games if they participate in a sport. Students seeing their teachers at these events shows that teachers care about them even outside of the classroom.

Quote explained: This is the craziest thing I have ever read. A student is not capable of living two lifes and this is what the school system really wants. Teachers must realize that every student comes from a different background and that they all bring something different to the classroom. The school must accept all their students and all of their diverse backgrounds. The home culture will always come into play during school and teachers should take that time to educate the entire class about diversity and how everyone is different.  The classroom should be a safe place for them to be able to talk about their lifes and not pretend that they do not exist outside of school.

Quote explained: This goes along with quote number 2 in that teachers must see the students as more than just students and see them as individuals. Teachers must remember that all the students go home to different places and they all face different challenges when they get there. Making examples about their community and the things they see everyday and not just whats in the text book, can help the students get a better understanding of the school work. Teachers must know that students situations are all different and they cannot treat all students equal. Each teacher must treat students with respect and make sure that each students knows that they can come to the teacher with any troubles they have.

Quote explained: This quote is talked about in pervious pages, but it doesn’t fully reside with me until page 37. Other teachers are telling these new teachers to be tough and not to let these students into their life’s and that just doesn’t make since. The only way for a teacher to be able to connect to their students is to have them open up to them. If the teacher is not opening up to their students and letting them see the person they are outside of the classroom, how are the students supposed to do that either? Teachers didn’t want to put a personal touch on any of their lessons, because they didn’t want the students to see them as weak or happy. The students must see their teachers as normal individuals. Individuals who have experiences and who want to bring those experiences to the classroom so they can encourage the students to go out in the world and have these experiences for themselves.

I had to take time out to learn how to cut white hair. I needed to get new tools to give haircuts to people who weren’t black because the texture of their hair was different. Quote explained: This quote is what teaching is all about! Every student is different and each student is going to need different things from a teacher. It’s the teacher’s duty to the school, and the student to be able to reach a student on an individual level. Every student is going to require a unique learning experience from a teacher and it can range from examples to hands on experiments in class. It’s the teachers job to be able to learn enough about the students to be able to perform these task that make learning something a student wants to do.

I chose this video, because on page 63 the author is talking about how students with similarly backgrounds, but different personality types all come together to have a rap battle. A teacher can bring this into the class to have students all working together as a new teaching strategy to have students rap about what is going on in class. In this video the teacher uses a popular rap song and replaces the words with math words that the class is learning to entice students to use the song while they are in class. This is fairly useful, because in the video he has a lot of the students involved and this would be a fun thing to do during class having all the students participate who wish to do so. The teacher must create a classroom family, because sometimes the kindness they experience in the classroom is the only time they will feel apart of something special. In the book it talks about parents not showing up, or not helping with homework, but every family is experiencing life differently. A teacher cannot blame the students for their parents actions, the teacher must create a special place where the students feel free from the world around them. A teacher must be an educator, and friend in a classroom. Students should always feel cherished, and accepted when walking into a classroom no matter what they are feeling when they leave the school.

This video shows that the monkey was helping guide the dog cross the river. The monkey was pulling the dog for most of the time and sometimes we all have to be pulled to do something we don't want to do. It seems the monkey knew they needed to cross the river and there was no way that the monkey was going to leave the dog behind. To me this represents cosmopolitanism, because they are working together to achieve something. They are working to cross the river. In the book it talks about a students role in the classroom and it's very important that each student take their role seriously because there are other students depending on them. This video teaches the lesson between favoritism and treating people the same. Every student is completely different and that is exactly how a teacher should treat their student. Teachers should treat everyone different, because all the students bring something different to the classroom. In the book a student gets scolded for talking, but the student was actually helping another student with their work. So instead of getting on the student for talking, the teacher should have redirected the student and said, "we are not talking right now, but you can help them later." Teachers must treat all students with favoritism, to let the students know that the teacher values them all differently. This video is all about slang and how to use it in sentences. Todays students are always using slang, they don't even know its slang and they are still using it. Using the language of the students you are teaching can help a teacher better relate to their students. Also its lets the students see that the teachers are just like them in that they use the same language. Especially when it comes to slang in the music that the students are listening to. It's not hard for a teacher to hear or to pick up on what music their students are listening to so that they can become familiar with and maybe even bring it up in a lesson.
